Job summary

SMD is seeking a Supplier QHSE Engineer to ensure supplier QHSE performance across multiple sites. You will audit, assess risks, and drive continual improvement in line with ISO standards and customer requirements.

The role interfaces with Procurement, Engineering, Manufacturing and Logistics to qualify suppliers, monitor performance, and lead CAPA activities, with a focus on reducing defects and ensuring compliance.

Qualifications

• Technical qualification in Engineering or equivalent.
• Knowledge of ISO QMS (Quality, Health, Safety & Environment).
• NEBOSH General Certificate or equivalent required.
• Lead/Internal Auditor certification desirable.
• Valid driving licence essential.

Responsibilities

• Qualify, evaluate and approve new suppliers.
• Conduct supplier capability assessments and risk evaluations.
• Monitor supplier quality performance through KPIs and scorecards.
• Lead supplier corrective action activities and closure of non-conformances.
• Manage Supplier Corrective Action Requests (SCARs).
• Support supplier development and improvement initiatives.
• Identify and mitigate supplier-related quality risks.
• Drive reduction of supplier defects, scrap, rework, and customer complaints.
• Plan and conduct supplier audits (process, ISO 9001/ISO 14001/ISO 45001 and regulatory requirements).
• Verify compliance with company procedures and industry standards.
• Track and ensure closure of audit findings.
• Review supplier risk assessments and safe working practices.
• Support incident investigations involving supplier activities.
• Work with Procurement/Engineering/Manufacturing/Operations/Logistics/Customer Quality teams.
• Support NPI and supplier readiness activities.

Supplier QHSE Engineer - Full Time, Permanent

Reporting to the QHSE Lead, this role will be responsible for ensuring that suppliers consistently meet the organisation's Quality, Health, Safety and Environmental requirements. The role focuses on supplier development, supplier performance monitoring, risk management, auditing, problem-solving, and driving continual improvement throughout the supply chain.

About the role

The position acts as the primary interface between the business and its suppliers regarding QHSE performance, supporting compliance with ISO standards, customer requirements, regulatory obligations, and business objectives.

Other key duties include:

• Qualify, evaluate and approve new suppliers.
• Conduct supplier capability assessments and risk evaluations.
• Monitor supplier quality performance through KPIs and scorecards.
• Lead supplier corrective action activities and closure of non-conformances.
• Manage Supplier Corrective Action Requests (SCARs).
• Support supplier development and improvement initiatives.
• Identify and mitigate supplier-related quality risks.
• Drive reduction of supplier defects, scrap, rework, and customer complaints.

• Support new product introduction (NPI) and supplier readiness activities.

What skills and qualifications do I need?

This person should have a technical qualification in Engineering or equivalent knowledge and experience. Knowledge of ISO Quality, Health, Safety and Environmental management systems and procedures is essential along with the NEBOSH General Certificate (or equivalent). Lead/Internal Auditor certification is desirable. This is a multi-site role so a valid driving licence is essential.

You will need proven experience in a similar QHSE role involving QMS system auditing.

You will possess excellent communication skills, both written and verbal with strong technical report writing skills. Building strong working relationships and the ability to influence at all levels, are key requirements for this role as you will work across the organisation. The ability to prioritise and manage a varied workload is also required.
