Job summary

SMD is seeking a QHSE Lead to drive the Quality, Health, Safety and Environmental management across all sites. This role reports to the Head of CI and leads the QHSE team, developing, implementing and maintaining ISO9001, ISO45001 and ISO14001 certifications.

You will ensure regulatory compliance and customer expectations while promoting continuous improvement, risk reduction and operational excellence, coordinating with external bodies and leading root cause analysis and audits at UK sites.

Qualifications

• Formal qualifications or relevant experience in Quality or HSE.
• Experience with Continuous Improvement activities.
• Experience with Quality and Safety management systems; manufacturing/engineering background preferred.

Responsibilities

• Lead the QHSE team across all SMD sites and maintain QMS.
• Develop, implement and maintain ISO9001, ISO45001, ISO14001 certifications.
• Support management reviews and produce monthly QHSE performance analyses.
• Facilitate improvement activities and apply change management best practices.
• Monitor safety and quality standards and ensure compliance.
• Liaise with Environmental Agency, Local Authorities, Regulators and LRQA.
• Lead root cause analysis using 8D, 5Why, Ishikawa and FMEA.
• Chair Senior Quality Review meetings and track corrective actions.

QHSE Lead

Reporting to the Head of CI, this role will be responsible for leading the QHSE team across all SMD sites. The QHSE Lead is responsible for developing, implementing, and maintaining the organisation's Quality, Health, Safety, and Environmental management systems.

About the role

The role ensures compliance with regulatory requirements, customer expectations, and industry standards while driving a culture of continuous improvement, operational excellence, and risk reduction across the business.

Key duties will also include developing, implementing and maintaining SMD’s certification with ISO9001, ISO45001, ISO14001

Other key duties include:

• Supporting the Group’s management review processes.
• Producing monthly QHSE performance analysis, reporting to the Head of CI.
• Providing ideas, opportunities and challenges across all business streams to instil continuous improvement.
• Support and facilitate improvement activities in SMD implementing best practices for change management
• Monitor safety and quality standards and ensure compliance with these requirements.
• Liaising with external bodies such as the Environmental Agency, Local Authorities, Regulators and LRQA.
• Supporting fire risk assessment audits annually at each UK site.
• Carrying out accident investigation with the injured party and report significant findings.
• Lead root cause analysis investigation on major HSER’s and NCR’s. Through 8D, 5Why, Ishikawa diagram and FMEA methodologies.
• Quarterly review of key databases for trend analysis, such as, Risk Register, NCR’s, Services Cases, Warranty spend, Infield reports and incidence etc.
• Chair monthly Senior Quality Review reviewing Infield issues, Major NCRS and customer feedback. Tracking those items the company will invest in long term resolutions.

What skills and qualifications do I need?

This person should have formal qualifications or relevant experience in a Quality or a HSE subject. Experience with Continuous Improvement activities. Experience with Quality and Safety management systems is a must as is experience in manufacturing or engineering.

You will need excellent communication skills, both written and verbal. Building strong working relationships and the ability to influence at all levels, are key requirements for this role as you will work across the organisation. The ability to prioritise and manage a varied workload is also required.
