Job summary

Network Rail is seeking a safety-focused supervisor at Barrow upon So Trent to lead a multi-skilled team and ensure work is delivered safely and to required standards. You will establish safe systems of work, manage resources and maintain compliance across projects.

The role requires practical trade experience, strong communication, and a focus on continuous improvement within company policies. Salary is £46,402 with a closing date of 31 August 2026 and pre-employment checks.

Qualifications

  • Trained and qualified in the relevant trade.
  • Experience arranging and implementing safe systems of work.
  • Experience organising and delivering work safely and efficiently.
  • Ability to lead, motivate and direct a multi‑skilled team.
  • Promote safe working behaviours within the team.
  • Able to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.

Responsibilities

  • Establish and maintain appropriate safety arrangements for staff and contractors.
  • Carry out work safely and in accordance with safe systems of work procedures and method statements.
  • Direct work activities to agreed standards.
  • Supervise and check quality and compliance of completed work.
  • Deliver and maintain an effective service to customers and stakeholders.
  • Prepare work specifications, scopes of work and method statements including Safe System of Work Plans.
  • Ensure staff have appropriate competencies and vehicles/equipment are fit for use.

Your Experience And Skills
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Establish and maintain appropriate safety arrangements for staff under your control including Contractors.
  • Carry out work safely and in accordance with the safe systems of work procedures, method statements or other relevant instructions.
  • Undertake work and associated duties in accordance with standards as directed.
  • Undertake and direct work activities in a safe and efficient manner and in accordance with all relevant standards.
  • Supervise and check the quality of work undertaken and confirm assets are compliant to standards.
  • Deliver and maintain an effective service to customers and key stakeholders.
  • Prepare work and resource specifications, scopes of work, and method statements including Safe System of Work Plans.
  • Check that the staff under your control have the appropriate and valid competencies.
  • Check that vehicles, plant, tools, equipment and materials under your control are fit for use and are used/stored and disposed of correctly.
  • Manage the allocation of resources.
  • Accurately report all work completed/not completed and produce/maintain records as required.
  • Assist in the monitoring and review of staff competence and welfare.
  • Contribute to your own development and that of others.
  • Manage the development of individuals and the engagement of the team
  • Adhere to company policies and procedures.
Essential
  • Trained and where appropriate, qualified in the relevant trade.
  • Experience of arranging and implementing safe systems of work.
  • Experience of organising and controlling the safe and efficient delivery of work.
  • Experience and ability to lead, motivate and direct a multi-skilled team.
  • Able to demonstrate, promote and embed safe working behaviours within the team.
  • Able to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Experience in the servicing and repair of either building fabric or building plant and equipment.
  • Knowledge of relevant standards, procedures and instructions.
  • Hold and retain competencies relevant to this post, required by business need.
  • Able and willing to drive vehicles as required by business need.
  • Computer literate.

  • Membership of CITB Construction Skill Certification Scheme.
