Job summary

Network Rail is seeking a maintenance supervisor to oversee worksites, assure quality, and enforce safe practices across the North West region. You will support asset condition assessments, renewals, and maintenance planning, while coordinating staff and resources to deliver work safely and efficiently.

You will ensure compliance with standards, procedures and safe systems of work, and contribute to staff welfare and development.

Qualifications

  • Experience directing and supervising worksites and safely delivering work.
  • Knowledge of resource and work planning processes and systems.
  • Knowledge/experience of rail testing, lubrication inspection, maintenance, renewal and asset condition assessment techniques.
  • Knowledge of relevant standards, procedures and instructions.
  • Awareness of cost and waste control techniques.
  • Able to promote safe working behaviours within the team.
  • Able to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Able to coach, influence and develop others.
  • Hold/working towards NVQ level 2 or 3 in a relevant subject or equivalent experience.
  • Able and willing to drive vehicles as required.

  • Support asset management through condition assessments and renewal planning.
  • Assist with staff supervision, resource allocation and monitoring of work quality and asset condition.

About the role

You will be responsible for supervising and assuring the quality of work delivered, ensuring all assets and activities comply with relevant standards, company policies, and safe systems of work. This includes carrying out inspections, prioritising work, preparing method statements and Safe System of Work Plans, and supporting the development of work plans that enable delivery to be safe, efficient, and compliant. You will also contribute to asset management by assisting with asset condition assessments, identifying renewal requirements, and ensuring work is delivered in line with maintenance plans.

In addition, you will support effective team and resource management by assisting with resource allocation, staff supervision, and monitoring work quality, compliance, and asset condition. You will help maintain accurate systems, records, and databases, contribute to staff competence, welfare, and disciplinary processes where required, and carry out staff surveillance activities as directed. Ongoing personal development and supporting the development of others forms a key part of the role.

Your experience and skills
  1. Experience of directing and supervising worksites and the safe and efficient delivery of work.
  2. Knowledge of resource and work organisation/planning processes and systems.
  3. Knowledge and experience of rail testing & lubrication inspection, maintenance, renewal and asset condition assessment techniques.
  4. Knowledge of relevant standards, procedures and instructions.
  5. Awareness of cost and waste control techniques.
  6. Able to demonstrate, promote and embed safe working behaviours within the team.
  7. Able to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  8. Able to coach, influence and develop others.
  9. Hold and retain competencies relevant to this post and required by business need.
  10. Ideally hold (or be working towards) an NVQ level 2 or 3 (or equivalent) in a relevant subject or have attained the appropriate level of knowledge gained through equivalent relevant experience.
  11. Able and willing to drive vehicles as required by business need.
