Warrington, Manchester OR Derby - Hybrid working options available

We are Rolls-Royce SMR and we're doing something that's never been done before. We're revolutionising an industry. That's a once-in-a-career opportunity for those excited by such a challenge. This is more than just a job; this is a legacy.

We are now recruiting for the exciting role of Senior Engineer - Structural Engineer, to be involved in an industry leading, cutting-edge project for a new type of power station.

Job Purpose:

The Senior Engineer - Structural Integrity will work within the Component and Structural Integrity Integration team on the development of the structural integrity requirements and guidance, and assist in their implementation in component designs and across the Environment, Safety, Security and Safeguards (E3S) case.

Structural integrity requires a holistic case to be made for pressure vessel and component reliability, considering design, materials, stress analysis, non-destructive examination, manufacturing and quality.

Key Results & What Can Be Achieved in The Role:

Key outcomes that role success will be judged against are:

  • Maturity and quality of structural integrity requirements and guidance.
  • Consistency and efficiency in implementation of the requirements and guidance across the business.
  • Quality of structural integrity case and regulatory engagements.
  • Supervision and development of a small team.
  • Delivery of outputs within the role scope.

The individual will be expected to flex and grow with the demands from the business.

The Key Selection Criteria:

  • Knowledge of the Cross-Functional Structural Integrity Discipline in the Nuclear Industry

Understanding of the cross-functional nature of a higher reliability nuclear structural integrity case against the UK expectations (as set out in the ONR Safety Assessment Principles EMC.1 to EMC.3). The candidate should understand the role that the following disciplines play in structural integrity:

  • Design and analysis
  • Materials
  • Quality
  • Manufacture

The candidate is not expected to have detailed technical knowledge of each of those disciplines, but is expected to have a broad understanding of all of them, which may be supplemented by more in-depth knowledge in one or more areas.

  • Understanding of Pressure Vessels and their Design Codes

The candidate should have a broad understanding of pressure vessel design or design of other pressure retaining mechanical components such as valves, pumps or heat exchangers.

The candidate should have an understanding of nuclear design codes, with knowledge of the technical provisions and arrangements of ASME Boiler & Pressure Vessel Code Section III (or international equivalent). Alternatively, the candidate should have a strong knowledge of the structural integrity provisions of non-nuclear design codes such as EN13445, ASME VIII, PED/PSSR etc.

  • Ability to Structure and Present Logical Safety Arguments

The candidate shall be capable of constructing arguments to support safety case claims, for example through logical decomposition. They should be able to clearly articulate them through written reports, letters or presentations

  • Ability to lead and manage small engineering team to deliver technical work packages

The candidate shall be able to plan, coordinate and deliver ambiguous technical work packages. They should be capable of either personally delivering technical work, or deliver it through the provision of technical oversight of other engineers and review of their outputs.

The candidate may be required to lead a small team of direct reports, foster collaboration and innovation within that team, and maintain a positive inclusive team culture. This will include providing direction and ensuring that appropriate governance and assurance is applied in line with the business processes.

The candidate shall be an excellent team player that is prepared to support any aspect of the business when required, display an appropriate questioning attitude and excel in periods of uncertainty within a learning culture. This will include being willing to work in an ever-changing and ambiguous environment, and remain flexible to the evolving needs of the business, while sustaining exceptional leadership behaviours.

  • Ability to communicate and build relationships

The role requires the candidate to communicate and build relationships with a large variety of stakeholders across the business, covering functions such as component design, system design, analysis, verification, manufacturing, supply chain, commercial, programme management and business development.

The candidate will be required to interact with senior leadership, primarily within engineering but also across the different business functions, and will be capable of communicating with different levels of the business hierarchy.

The candidate will be required to support engagements with external stakeholders, including customers, regulators and suppliers. This will include being capable of supporting a variety of discussion with third parties, as well as being capable of leading presentations on complex cross functional topics relevant to the role scope.

Qualifications & Training:

The candidate will demonstrate actively working towards Institute recognition, also hold a relevant technical degree level qualification or HND.

Pay and Benefits

We anticipate paying a salary of between £48,000 - £60,000 plus:-

  • Bonus - Performance related bonus of up to 12.5%
  • Benefits Allowance - £2200, enabling you to create a bespoke package
  • Pension - 12% employer and 6% employee contributions.
  • Holidays - 28 days holiday (+ public holidays) and the ability to buy or sell up to 4 days
  • Private Medical Insurance - BUPA single cover health care
