Structural EngineerCore Responsibilities
Core Technical Responsibilities
- Undertake structural analysis and design across a range of building types, materials and forms of construction, including steel, reinforced concrete, masonry and timber.
- Prepare clear and accurate structural calculations, design sketches and technical information in accordance with relevant British Standards, Eurocodes and project requirements.
- Develop practical, buildable structural solutions from concept through to detailed design and construction.
- Assess existing structures and develop appropriate repair, strengthening or alteration solutions where required.
- Review drawings and models to ensure structural design intent is accurately represented and coordinated.
Project Support & Delivery
- Take responsibility for the structural engineering delivery of projects, working closely with technicians, civil engineers and other members of the design team.
- Coordinate structural designs with architectural, civil, MEP and specialist subcontractor information, identifying and resolving design interfaces at an early stage.
- Respond to technical queries from clients, contractors and other consultants throughout the design and construction process.
- Attend site inspections and meetings where required, reviewing construction against the structural design and providing practical engineering input.
- Manage design information and calculations in accordance with HBL’s quality procedures and project requirements.
- Work to agreed project programmes, identifying technical or programme risks and raising these with the wider project team.
Technical Development & Quality
- Maintain a strong understanding of relevant structural engineering legislation, design standards, technical guidance and industry best practice.
- Undertake appropriate checking and review of calculations, drawings and technical information in line with experience and level of responsibility.
- Contribute to the development of HBL’s calculation templates, standard details, specifications and technical procedures.
- Develop proficiency in structural analysis and design software, using appropriate engineering judgement to verify and interpret outputs.
- Maintain CPD and actively develop technical knowledge across different structural materials, systems and construction methods.
Collaboration & Communication
- Work closely with engineers, technicians and external consultants to deliver coordinated and efficient design solutions.
- Communicate structural concepts and technical issues clearly to both technical and non-technical members of the project team.
- Participate in internal design reviews, contributing ideas and challenging solutions where opportunities exist to improve buildability, efficiency or value.
- Support and share knowledge with graduate and junior engineers, helping develop their technical understanding and engineering judgement.
Professional & Leadership Responsibilities (Senior Level)
- Lead the structural engineering delivery of small and medium-sized projects, taking responsibility for technical quality, coordination and programme.
- Provide technical guidance, checking and mentoring to graduate and intermediate engineers.
- Develop structural design strategies at concept stage and communicate these effectively to clients and the wider design team.
- Work independently on complex engineering problems, applying sound engineering judgement and recognising when specialist input or further investigation is required.
- Take an active role in maintaining and improving technical standards across HBL, including design reviews, checking procedures and knowledge sharing.
- Support project management activities, including programme, resource planning and monitoring project delivery against the agreed scope.
General Expectations
- Demonstrate strong analytical, organisational and problem-solving skills, with attention to technical detail.
- Take ownership of assigned projects and responsibilities and communicate proactively where risks, changes or technical issues arise.
- Uphold HBL’s professional standards and contribute positively to a collaborative working environment.
- Take ownership of personal development and CPD, including progression towards or maintenance of appropriate professional qualifications.
