Job description

Stress and Performance Engineer
West Yorkshire

Are you an experienced mechanical engineer with a background in stress analysis, finite element analysis (FEA), or structural integrity? We are supporting a leading engineering organisation in the search for a Stress and Performance Engineer to assess and validate mechanical designs, ensuring products meet demanding requirements for strength, durability, performance and safety within a high-integrity engineering environment.

This is an opportunity to contribute to the development and validation of complex mechanical power transmission systems, working alongside multidisciplinary engineering teams to resolve technical challenges, improve product designs and maintain the integrity of critical mechanical components used in demanding applications.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Assess mechanical designs for strength, durability, performance and safety using appropriate analytical methods, including finite element analysis, first-principles hand calculations and system analysis.

  • Conduct static stress and fatigue analysis to evaluate component integrity and support product validation and qualification activities.

  • Identify appropriate analytical solutions, recommend design improvements and propose alternative methods where required.

  • Provide technical analysis and engineering support to multidisciplinary project teams, contributing to the delivery of robust and reliable mechanical designs.

  • Review and critique analytical results and design proposals to ensure technical accuracy and product integrity.

  • Maintain and contribute to the development of engineering analysis procedures, ensuring consistency and compliance with relevant requirements.

  • Support manufacturing and purchasing concession requests by providing technical assessments and recommendations.

  • Produce technical documentation, including analysis reports and engineering drawings, to communicate findings and support design decisions.

  • Ensure engineering analysis complies with internal procedures, relevant industry standards, regulations and qualification requirements.

  • Participate in design and process failure mode and effects analysis (DFMEA/PFMEA), alongside continuous improvement activities.

  • Work collaboratively with engineering colleagues, customers and other internal teams to resolve in-service issues and provide application engineering support where required.

Candidate Requirements:
  • Minimum NVQ Level 3 qualification in Mechanical Engineering, supported by relevant engineering experience.

  • Experience conducting mechanical stress analysis, including static stress calculations, fatigue analysis and first-principles hand calculations.

  • Proficiency in finite element analysis (FEA) tools and the ability to interpret and apply analytical results to engineering problems.

  • Understanding of mechanical materials, their properties and associated manufacturing and processing techniques.

  • Knowledge of structural analysis methodologies and the assessment of mechanical component integrity.

  • Ability to interpret technical requirements and apply relevant engineering standards and design protocols.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to make evidence-based technical decisions.

  • Effective communication skills, with the ability to present technical findings, challenge proposals constructively and collaborate across engineering teams.

  • Good organisational and time management skills, with the ability to deliver work to agreed time, cost and quality requirements.

Desirable Experience:
  • A degree in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related discipline.

  • Experience working with gearboxes, gears, shafts, bearings, gearcases or other mechanical power transmission components.

  • Knowledge of associated engineering technologies, including rotor dynamics, tribology, thermal response, noise and vibration.

  • Familiarity with relevant industry standards such as ISO, AGMA, DIN, FKM or DNV.

  • Experience undertaking fatigue and structural analysis to support component certification or approval by external bodies.

  • Experience supporting product validation, engineering qualification, DFMEA/PFMEA or continuous improvement activities.

  • Background in defence, aerospace, heavy engineering, power transmission or another safety-critical or highly regulated engineering environment.

Benefits / Wider Package:
  • 33 days annual leave including bank holidays.

  • Competitive pension package with up to 13% combined contribution and immediate enrolment.

  • Free onsite parking and access to employee fitness facilities.

  • A 37.5-hour working week, Monday to Friday, with core business hours and adaptable start and finish times.

Additional Information:
  • Applicants must have the right to work in the UK and be able to satisfy the security clearance, background screening and export control requirements associated with the role.

  • Please note that eligibility may be affected by factors including nationality, previous nationalities held and country of birth, depending on applicable security and export control restrictions.
