Job summary

Durham County Council is seeking an experienced Maintenance Manager Street Lighting to lead our street lighting maintenance and construction teams across County Durham, delivering safe, high‑quality services.

The role requires strong leadership, budgeting and project delivery skills, along with comprehensive knowledge of electrical inspection and testing; you will manage projects from conception to completion and collaborate with contractors, council teams and apprentices.

Qualifications

• Significant experience in street lighting maintenance and construction operations.
• Strong leadership and people management skills.
• Sound knowledge of electrical inspection and testing requirements and relevant legislation.
• Experience of managing budgets, resources and project delivery.
• Excellent communication, organisational and problem-solving skills.

Responsibilities

• Managing and developing operational street lighting teams.
• Planning, programming and delivering maintenance and construction works.
• Ensuring compliance with health and safety legislation, electrical regulations and council procedures.
• Managing projects from conception through to completion, including financial monitoring and reporting.
• Preparing and approving job packs, permits, RAMS and traffic management requirements.
• Monitoring contractor performance and providing technical guidance where required.
• Supporting recruitment, workforce development and apprentice mentoring.
• Participating in the out-of-hours management rota.
• Significant experience in street lighting maintenance and construction operations.
• Strong leadership and people management skills.
• Sound knowledge of electrical inspection and testing requirements and relevant legislation.
• Experience of managing budgets, resources and project delivery.
• Excellent communication, organisational and problem-solving skills.
