Job summary

Bournemouth Water is seeking a Valve & Strategic Asset Technician to help maintain the drinking water network's integrity, reliability, and performance. You will inspect, operate, and service a range of strategic assets, supporting planned and reactive maintenance with partners and teams to ensure safe, continuous water supply.

The role requires independent work, collaboration with field teams, and a strong focus on safety, quality, and regulatory compliance.

Qualifications

  • Experience in water utilities or a similar network environment.
  • Ability to maintain assets, buildings and infrastructure.
  • Proven ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Strong organisational and workload prioritisation skills.
  • Excellent communication and customer service skills.
  • Experience delivering work to deadlines and targets.
  • Ability to remain calm under pressure during incidents.
  • Full UK Driving Licence.

  • Support activities to maintain network reliability and minimise disruption.

About The Role

As a Valve & Strategic Asset Technician, you will play a key role in maintaining the integrity, reliability, and performance of the drinking water network. You will be responsible for inspecting, operating, servicing, and maintaining a range of strategic network assets to ensure the safe and continuous supply of water to customers.

Working independently and alongside operational teams and delivery partners, you will support planned and reactive maintenance activities, contribute to network resilience, and ensure all work is completed safely, efficiently, and in compliance with company standards and regulatory requirements.

Key Responsibilities
Asset Operation & Maintenance
  • Carry out planned and reactive maintenance on strategic water network assets.
  • Inspect, maintain, and service air valves, control valves, pressure reducing valves, and associated network fittings.
  • Support the operation and maintenance of service reservoirs, pump stations, buildings, and other operational sites.
  • Undertake reservoir cleaning activities and assist with asset condition assessments.
  • Operate inspection equipment, including CCTV and remotely operated vehicle (ROV) technology, where required.
Network Performance & Resilience
  • Support activities that maintain network reliability and minimise customer disruption.
  • Assist with planned and emergency supply interruption mitigation activities.
  • Conduct trunk main inspections, mains flushing, valve servicing, and network maintenance works.
  • Undertake excavation activities in non-highway locations to access and maintain network assets.
Health, Safety & Environmental Compliance
  • Demonstrate a strong commitment to health, safety, security, and environmental standards.
  • Ensure all work is completed in accordance with company policies, procedures, and quality management systems.
  • Minimise environmental impact by supporting leakage reduction, preventing contamination, and promoting sustainable operational practices.
  • Maintain awareness of contamination risks and respond appropriately to any incidents or concerns.
Customer & Stakeholder Service
  • Deliver a high standard of customer service when interacting with customers, contractors, local authorities, and colleagues.
  • Ensure network assets and operational sites remain secure and protected.
  • Maintain company vehicles and represent the organisation professionally in the community.
Essential Knowledge, Skills & Experience
  • Experience working within a water supply or utility environment.
  • Ability to maintain operational assets, buildings, and infrastructure.
  • Proven ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Strong organisational and workload prioritisation skills.
  • Excellent communication and customer service skills.
  • Experience delivering work to deadlines and performance targets.
  • Ability to remain calm and effective during operational incidents and periods of pressure.
  • Full UK Driving Licence.
Desirable
  • ONC, City & Guilds, or NVQ Level 2 qualification in Water Distribution or a related discipline. [
  • Utilities, pipeline construction, or streetworks experience.
  • Experience using GIS systems and network information tools.
  • EUSR Water Hygiene qualification.
  • LGV C+E licence and additional operational certifications.
Qualifications Essential
  • GCSE (or equivalent) in English and Mathematics.
  • EUSR Water Hygiene Certificate.

Please be aware that when fully trained there will be a requirement to join a Standby Rota.
