Job summary

Lister Community School is seeking an enthusiastic, organised School Librarian to lead and develop the Learning Resource Centre (LRC) into a vibrant, inclusive environment that supports teaching, learning and student development.

The post holder will manage LRC resources and budgets, lead reading interventions, develop information literacy programmes and coordinate library staff and volunteers to maximise impact across the school.

Qualifications

  • A passion for reading, literacy and improving outcomes for young people.
  • Experience of working within a library, Learning Resource Centre, educational or similar learning environment.
  • Strong organisational and administrative skills, with the ability to manage resources, budgets and competing priorities effectively.
  • The ability to inspire students and create a welcoming environment that encourages curiosity and independent learning.
  • Knowledge and understanding of developing literacy, reading and information skills programmes.
  • Confidence using ICT and library management systems to enhance learning opportunities.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build positive relationships with students, staff, families and external partners.
  • A commitment to inclusion, safeguarding and ensuring all students feel supported and valued.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and develop the strategic vision for the Learning Resource Centre, ensuring it supports the school’s priorities for teaching, learning and literacy.
  • Manage the day-to-day operation of the school library, maintaining an efficient, safe and engaging environment for students and staff.
  • Develop and maintain a high-quality collection of resources that supports the curriculum and encourages independent learning.
  • Promote a strong reading culture through reading interventions, literacy initiatives, events and enrichment activities.
  • Develop and implement information skills and literacy programmes that enable students to become confident and effective users of information.
  • Ensure effective use of ICT systems to support library management and access to information resources.
  • Work collaboratively with curriculum departments, teaching staff, external agencies and feeder schools to strengthen the role of the LRC.
  • Create, monitor and review the whole-school Library/Learning Resource Centre policy and development plan.
  • Manage library budgets, monitor expenditure and work with departments to ensure resources are allocated effectively.
  • Lead, support and develop Assistant Librarians, LSAs and volunteers, identifying opportunities for training and professional development.
  • Develop and maintain resources that support staff development and wider teaching and learning across the school.
  • Organise and promote library activities, including before-school, lunchtime and after-school clubs.
  • Maintain an inclusive learning environment that empowers students to become confident, resourceful and independent learners.
