Job summary

STEP is seeking an experienced project leader to deliver a diverse portfolio of Science & Technology projects, spanning early-stage studies to large-scale programmes worth millions. You will collaborate with design and engineering teams, translate ambiguous needs into clear delivery plans, and drive governance, budgeting and risk management across the portfolio.

You will build high-performing teams, navigate uncertainty, and shape strategic delivery in a highly regulated, innovative environment

Qualifications

• Significant experience delivering multi £m scale projects in complex, technical and highly regulated environments.
• Experience balancing robust controls with evolving design during development phases.
• Proven ability to lead teams in ambiguous environments and drive delivery.
• Extensive use of various project management methodologies.
• Influencing leaders and stakeholders to advance Science & Technology initiatives.
• Innovative and R&D mindset with a track record of problem solving.
• Experience coordinating with wide range of stakeholders on major projects.
• Strong budgeting, commercial and programme management experience.
• Comfortable with change and autonomous in transformational organisations.
• Experience managing ambiguity in fast-developing programmes.
• PM certifications like APM Chartered Project Professional.
• Graduate-level education completed.

Responsibilities

• Lead the successful delivery of an approved portfolio of Science & Technology projects.
• Develop and manage a pipeline of concepts, research opportunities and risk reduction initiatives.
• Translate ambiguous requirements into defined projects, business cases and delivery plans.
• Provide leadership to project teams with governance, planning, scheduling and risk management.
• Drive prioritisation to align investments with programme objectives and goals.
• Establish performance baselines, track progress and take corrective actions.
• Collaborate across the STEP programme to secure resources and maximise delivery.
• Manage project budgets ranging from hundreds of thousands to multi-million pounds.
• Produce high-quality reporting for senior stakeholders and governance boards.
• Foster continuous improvement, innovation and delivery excellence.
• Support recruitment, development and leadership of project management professionals.
