Job summary

SSEN Transmission in Scotland is seeking a System Planning and Investment Engineer to join the System Optimisation Team. You will develop and apply optimisation models to the North Scotland transmission network, enabling low-carbon generation integration and supporting system security studies.

You will work with planning, outage, operations, and project teams, use PSSE/PowerFactory for model validation, and communicate results clearly to stakeholders and regulators.

Qualifications

• Experience in power system analysis, design and outage planning.
• Proficient with PSSE and PowerFactory or similar tools.
• Strong knowledge of the electricity industry interfaces with regulators and network operators.
• Ability to write clear and well-structured technical reports and network requirements for senior management.
• Degree (or equivalent) in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems, Mathematics, or related discipline.

Responsibilities

• Develop, maintain, and apply optimisation models for the transmission network to assess performance, operability, and constraints, ensuring robustness and traceability in modelling assumptions and outputs.
• Optimise network topology, energisation sequencing, outage strategies, and constraint management, while supporting studies related to system security and regulatory submissions.
• Build, update, and validate power system models with industry-standard tools (e.g. PSSE, DIgSILENT PowerFactory).
• Utilise data analytics and automation to enhance and support optimisation workflows and develop digital tools for scenario analyses.
• Work with planning, outage, operations, and project teams, plus external stakeholders to present results and ensure compliance with codes and standards.
