Stores Manager
A leading logistics and transportation company is looking for a Stores Manager to join their team at their Leeds Vehicle Maintenance Depot. The successful candidate will be responsible for managing a team and overseeing stock valued at £3.5 million. This role requires a strong leader with experience in performance management, finance presentations, stock management, and supplier relationships. You will play a key role in ensuring the efficient running of the stores, as well as presenting financial data in key production meetings.


The key requirements for this Stores Manager role are:

  • Oversee a team of stores operatives, ensuring high performance, motivation, and adherence to operational and safety standards.
  • Oversee stock worth several million pounds, ensuring the effective ordering, distribution, and accuracy of materials required for vehicle maintenance and repairs. Ensure timely procurement and distribution of components to the maintenance team.
  • Develop a proactive safety culture and ensure compliance with health and safety regulations to maintain a safe working environment for the team and the site.
  • Manage the budget for the stores department, ensuring financial targets are met and costs are controlled within agreed limits. Prepare and present material costs, financial performance, and projections at key production meetings.
  • Process material requests from other depots and facilities, including the transfer of materials and booking of couriers as necessary. Ensure all materials meet company standards and are delivered to the right specifications.
  • Conduct regular performance reviews, handle disciplinary actions when necessary, and manage attendance and absence in line with company policies.
  • Build and maintain relationships with key suppliers, ensuring materials are delivered on time and meet the required standards. Regularly review supplier performance and negotiate where necessary to improve delivery and cost efficiency.
  • Lead and coordinate stock counts, including both physical counts and administrative tasks, to ensure accuracy and compliance with company policies.
  • Identify and implement improvements to stock management processes, material procurement, and inventory control to enhance efficiency and reduce operational downtime.

Experience required for this Stores Manager role are:

  • Proven experience in a materials or stores management role, ideally within an engineering or heavy haul logistics environment.
  • Demonstrable experience in people management, including leading teams, conducting performance reviews, and handling HR matters such as disciplinaries and recruitment.
  • Strong understanding of safety compliance and the ability to foster a culture of safety across the team.
  • Experience with stock control systems and processes, particularly in a maintenance or technical materials environment.
  • Strong financial acumen, including experience with budget management, cost control, and financial reporting.
  • Experience working with suppliers, including managing relationships, negotiating contracts, and ensuring the timely procurement of materials to meet operational needs.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to engage effectively with internal teams, suppliers, and external contractors.
  • A proactive and analytical approach to problem-solving, with a focus on continuous improvement.
