Job summary

Butler Rose in Plymouth is recruiting a Stock Accountant to monitor, analyse and control inventory across the business, partnering with operational and commercial teams to value, manage and report stock effectively.

The ideal candidate is a commercially aware finance professional with strong data skills, eager to deliver actionable insights and support ERP-based stock valuation and controls.

Qualifications

• Part-qualified accountant status or equivalent experience.
• Advanced Excel skills with Power BI or similar reporting tools.
• Experience analysing large and complex data sets.
• Strong understanding of stock accounting, inventory controls and reporting.
• Experience with ERP systems and accounting software.
• Excellent communication with non-finance stakeholders.

Responsibilities

• Produce detailed analysis of inventory performance including stock levels, ageing profiles and trends.
• Identify risks, opportunities and anomalies in inventory data with clear recommendations.
• Investigate stock discrepancies, determine root causes and propose corrective actions.
• Develop forecasting and trend analysis to support future inventory planning.
• Deliver insightful reporting to finance and non-finance stakeholders.
• Ensure accuracy and integrity of stock information in business systems.
• Support stock valuation processes and financial controls.
• Assist with stock counts and liaise with auditors when required.
• Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives for inventory controls and reporting.

Stock Accountant

Plymouth, Devon | Permanent | Full-Time

Butler Rose is proud to be partnering with a well-established and rapidly growing organisation in Plymouth to recruit a Stock Accountant. This is an exciting opportunity to join a business that places significant emphasis on data-driven decision-making and operational excellence.

This role is ideally suited to an analytical finance professional who enjoys working with large data sets, investigating trends, and providing meaningful insight that influences commercial and operational decisions across the business.

The Role

Reporting into the finance function, the Stock Accountant will play a key role in monitoring, analysing, and controlling inventory across the organisation. You will work closely with operational and commercial teams, helping to ensure stock is accurately valued, efficiently managed, and effectively reported.

Key duties will include:

• Producing detailed analysis of inventory performance, including stock levels, ageing profiles, trends, and key performance indicators.
• Identifying risks, opportunities, and anomalies within inventory data, providing clear recommendations to support business decision‑making.
• Investigating stock discrepancies, determining root causes, and recommending corrective actions to minimise losses and improve controls.
• Developing forecasting and trend analysis to support future inventory planning and purchasing activities.
• Delivering insightful reporting and presenting findings to both finance and non‑finance stakeholders.
• Ensuring the accuracy and integrity of stock‑related information within business systems.
• Supporting accurate stock valuation processes and ensuring compliance with accounting policies and financial controls.
• Assisting with stock counts and liaising with operational teams and auditors where required.
• Contributing to continuous improvement initiatives aimed at enhancing inventory controls, processes, and reporting capabilities.

Candidate Profile

The successful candidate will be a commercially aware and detail‑oriented finance professional with strong analytical capabilities and excellent stakeholder management skills.

You will ideally have:

• Part‑qualified accountant status or equivalent relevant experience.
• Advanced Excel skills and experience using Power BI or similar reporting tools.
• Experience analysing large and complex data sets.
• A strong understanding of stock accounting, inventory controls, and inventory‑related reporting.
• Experience working with ERP systems and accounting software.
• Excellent communication skills with the ability to explain financial information to non‑finance stakeholders.
• Strong attention to detail and a proactive approach to problem‑solving.
• A collaborative mindset and the ability to work effectively across multiple business functions.
