Job summary

Butler Rose is seeking an Assistant Accountant to join a growing finance team in Exeter. The role supports the delivery of accurate financial reporting, month-end activities and financial control processes, offering a clear path for progression in a collaborative environment.

You’ll work under the Financial Controller, handling journals, reconciliations and improvements across the finance function while developing technical accounting skills.

Qualifications

• AAT qualified or studying towards ACA/ACCA/CIMA.
• Experience in finance or accounting environment.
• Knowledge of accruals, prepayments and reconciliations.
• Proficient in Excel and Microsoft Office.
• Strong communication and collaborative mindset.

Responsibilities

• Support month-end, quarter-end and year-end reporting activities.
• Prepare and post journals, including accruals and prepayments.
• Complete balance sheet reconciliations and investigate discrepancies.
• Assist with maintenance of financial controls and regulatory reporting.
• Support internal and external audit processes.
• Contribute to finance projects, process improvements and automation initiatives.

Butler Rose is exclusively recruiting an Assistant Accountant to join a growing finance team, supporting the delivery of accurate financial reporting, month-end accounting activities and financial control processes. This is an excellent opportunity for an ambitious finance professional to develop their technical skills, gain exposure to a broad range of accounting activities and progress their career within a supportive environment.

The Role

Reporting into the Financial Controller, you'll play a key role in supporting the production of financial information, maintaining financial controls and assisting with reporting requirements across the business.

Key responsibilities will include:

• Supporting month-end, quarter-end and year-end reporting activities
• Preparing and posting journals, including accruals and prepayments
• Completing balance sheet reconciliations and investigating discrepancies
• Assisting with the maintenance of financial controls and compliance procedures
• Supporting statutory reporting and regulatory returns
• Investigating and resolving accounting and data quality issues
• Assisting with banking, treasury and cash management activities
• Supporting internal and external audit processes
• Contributing to finance projects, process improvements and automation initiatives
• Building strong relationships with stakeholders across the organisation and providing high-quality financial support

About You

We're keen to hear from candidates who are:

• AAT qualified or currently studying towards ACA, ACCA or CIMA
• Experienced within a finance or accounting environment
• Familiar with accounting principles, including accruals, prepayments and reconciliations
• Highly proficient in Excel and Microsoft Office
• Analytical, detail-focused and naturally organised
• Comfortable managing multiple priorities and deadlines
• Strong communicators who enjoy working collaboratively with colleagues and stakeholders
