Job summary

Substrate is building an AI-native automated lab infrastructure in London. You will develop the software layer that turns intent into executed experiments, orchestrating workflows across instruments and data capture with strong provenance.

You will own production services end-to-end, working closely with the founding software engineer and cross-disciplinary teams to ship reliable, scalable systems in a lab setting.

Qualifications

• Must have bar-raising mindset and attention to detail.
• Capable of acting with speed in ambiguous environments.
• Thinks about why and what would make it 100x better.
• Generalist across backend services, data pipelines and APIs.
• Experience building AI-native, production systems.
• Rigorous CI/CD and automated testing as a default approach.
• Owns architecture, reliability and observability end-to-end.

Responsibilities

• Build the infrastructure software that runs the lab across the stack.
• Develop APIs to translate customer intent into executable workflows.
• Ensure full provenance and data quality with versioned, runnable workflows.
• Own a service end-to-end, including reliability and on-call responsibilities.
• Collaborate with scientists and intelligence teams to shape architecture and hires.
