The States of Guernsey is looking for Orthopaedic Staff Nurses to join their Orthopaedic Unit.

The Ward Manager is responsible for De Sausmarez Ward, a 15- 18 bedded trauma ward and De Havilland, a 9 bedded elective unit while supporting the Orthopaedic Pre-Assessment Clinic. The Orthopaedic staff rotate between the two wards to allow for their ongoing training and development.

De Sausmarez Ward manages orthopaedic trauma patients. This includes spinal injuries, upper and lower limb fractures, and back pain. Many have complicated nursing needs, require MDT input, and complex discharge planning.

De Havilland Ward, and Orthopaedic Pre-Assessment manage the elective joint replacements. This includes preoperative review by nursing staff, Physiotherapist and Occupation Therapists. This identifies any concerns prior to the patient being admitted. De Havilland patients are admitted for elective procedures including hip, knee, shoulder, wrist, hand and ankle surgery.

Main duties of the job

  • Understand and adhere to the principles contained within the ward philosophy.
  • Show awareness and work towards meeting the agreed aims and objectives of the ward.
  • Put into practice the theory and principles of the agreed nursing model.
  • Manage total care of a group of patients within sphere of competence.
  • Supervise the practise of newly qualified and unqualified staff.
  • Ensure communication given to and received from other members of the multi disciplinaryteam is effective.
  • Ensure positive outcomes by putting into everyday working practice the structure and processto meet agreed standards for nursing care.
  • Be conversant with and adhere to Nursing and Midwifery Council Code of ProfessionalConduct.
  • Comply with the locally agreed framework for scope of professional practice.
  • Undertake nursing procedures in accordance with the Royal Marsden Manual of ClinicalNursing Procedures.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Provide direction by acting as a named assessor facilitating junior staff nurses and learners to complete approved competency programmes.

Act as facilitator to qualified and unqualified nursing staff providing them with the opportunity to achieve objectives of learning contracts to attain specific competences.

Maintain and develop own skills to promote evidence based practice.

Supervise patients in all aspects of their care giving professional advice and guidance where needed.

Recognise own limitations by referring when necessary to other more experienced nurses.

Participate in clinical supervision.

ROLE DEVELOPMENT:

Through the avenue of formal appraisal and performance interviews agree targets that enhance professional development to meet personal and organisational objectives.

Demonstrate an understanding of the role of Team Leader and provide professional support to the post holder.
