Job summary

The Economist is seeking a Staff Android Engineer to lead the mobile engineering team and shape the future of our Android platform. You will guide architectural decisions, mentor engineers, and drive scalable, high-performance experiences across our Android ecosystem.

You will collaborate with product, design, and backend teams to ensure quality feature delivery, set coding standards, and lead cross-functional initiatives.

Qualifications

• Proven experience in Android development with Kotlin and Jetpack Compose.
• Experience designing scalable mobile architecture.
• Strong leadership and mentoring skills.
• Experience with test automation and observability practices.

Responsibilities

• Lead the design, development, and evolution of Android architecture and performance-critical systems across the app.
• Collaborate with product, design, and platform leads to define technical strategy and feature delivery.
• Set coding standards and drive code reviews, architecture discussions, and design documentation.
• Identify cross-cutting concerns and lead platform-wide initiatives (performance, modularization, observability, test infra).
• Act as a technical mentor for engineers across levels to grow both technical and leadership capabilities.
• Champion performance, scalability, and maintainability in all builds and resolve system bottlenecks.
• Foster cross-platform collaboration by aligning with iOS and backend teams.
