Job description

Spinal Cord Injury Clinical Specialist - Nurse or Physiotherapist

As the Band 6 Spinal Cord Injury Clinical Specialist (SCIS), you will play a key role in delivering the acute outreach and admission service. You will seek innovative ways to improve the service and enhance the patient's experience. As a registered, accountable, and autonomous nurse or physiotherapist, you will act in your patients' best interests, taking personal responsibility for your actions and decisions. Your responsibilities will include liaising with referring clinicians, families, and patients with newly diagnosed spinal cord injury (SCI), offering advice, support, and educational input.

You will demonstrate strong leadership qualities that reinforce the Trust's values and beliefs.

You will support the acute outreach and admissions lead and, in their absence, take responsibility for the service, ensuring ongoing communication regarding the management of patients with SCI.

Main duties of the job
  1. Provide expert ongoing care for patients with SCI, ensuring effective communication with clinicians, families, and patients, and listening to their views.
  2. Communicate complex and sensitive information with reassurance, tact, or persuasion, working to overcome communication barriers within the multidisciplinary team.
  3. Demonstrate effective leadership, challenging performance, practice, attitudes, and behaviors that breach Trust values, policies, or professional conduct codes.
  4. Maintain confidentiality of information in line with Trust policies and statutory requirements.
  5. Monitor SCI-specific care in referring hospitals, providing specialist advice and support with kindness, compassion, and respect. Manage concerns, challenge poor practice, and communicate effectively with healthcare professionals.
