Job summary

Vetro Recruitment is seeking an experienced Specialist Speech & Language Therapist to support children across Cardiff and Swansea schools. This term-time-only position offers a flexible 41-week year, delivering targeted communication support for pupils with autism, learning disabilities, and other complex needs.

You will conduct assessments, plan interventions, and train staff, families, and carers while contributing to EHCP/IDP reviews and service development.

Qualifications

• Degree or Diploma in Speech & Language Therapy.
• Current HCPC registration.
• Experience with autistic pupils and complex needs.
• Knowledge of SEND legislation and evidence-based practice.
• Experience delivering training, coaching, mentoring, or workforce development.
• Willingness to undertake training in Dysphagia, AAC, PECS, Makaton.
• Strong communication, organisation, and report-writing skills.

Responsibilities

Job Description

We are seeking an experienced and passionate Specialist Speech & Language Therapist to join our multidisciplinary therapy team supporting children and young people with complex additional needs across schools in Cardiff and Swansea. This role offers a unique opportunity to work within a supportive environment, delivering tailored communication support to pupils with autism, learning disabilities, sensory needs, and emotional or attachment-related challenges.

Key Responsibilities

As a Specialist Speech & Language Therapist based in Cardiff and Swansea, your daily duties will include:

• Delivering specialist assessment, diagnosis, and intervention for pupils with complex communication needs.
• Managing a varied caseload, including pupils with autism, learning disabilities, and challenging behaviours.
• Supporting communication, interaction, AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication), and eating and drinking needs.
• Developing and implementing individualised therapy programmes for pupils and groups.
• Providing consultation, coaching, and practical support to education, care, and therapy colleagues.
• Delivering training to staff, families, and carers to promote effective communication strategies.
• Leading and promoting communication-friendly environments across our schools.
• Contributing to EHCP/IDP reviews, multidisciplinary planning, and wider service development.

Requirements & Qualifications

To be successful as a Specialist Speech & Language Therapist, you will need:

• Degree or Diploma in Speech & Language Therapy.
• Current HCPC registration.
• Proven post-registration experience working with autistic pupils and young people with complex needs.
• Strong understanding of SEND legislation and evidence-based practice.
• Experience of delivering training, coaching, mentoring, or workforce development.
• Knowledge of, or willingness to undertake training in, Dysphagia, AAC, PECS, and Makaton.
• Excellent communication, organisational, and report-writing skills.
• Full UK driving licence.
