Job description

This role is responsible for creating, reviewing, and maintaining accurate product specifications, ensuring compliance with customer standards, food safety regulations, and internal requirements. The Specification Technologist works closely with cross-functional teams and plays a key part in supporting technical integrity across the business.

Main Responsibilities:

  1. Create, update, and maintain product specifications to ensure compliance with customer standards and relevant legislation.
  2. Review and approve specifications for all raw materials.
  3. Prepare provisional specifications for new product proposals, providing sufficient detail for customer consideration.
  4. Complete finished product specifications in various formats, including retailer-specific and web-based platforms.
  5. Collaborate with teams across Technical, New Product Development (NPD), and Production to ensure specifications are aligned with expectations.
  6. Manage and update retailer and customer specification portals to maintain accurate, current information.
  7. Ensure product and labelling compliance with legal standards, customer guidelines, and BRCGS requirements.
  8. Support customer queries related to specifications, ingredients, and technical data.
  9. Liaise with suppliers to confirm raw material information is accurate and aligns with business needs.
  10. Maintain thorough documentation to support internal processes and external audits.
  11. Participate in technical meetings and reviews.
  12. Assist with internal audits based on BRCGS Food Safety Standards.
  13. Provide general support to the Technical Department when required.
  14. Systems Used:

  • InSight

Key Skills & Experience:

  • Previous experience in a similar role within food manufacturing is essential.
  • Good understanding of food safety laws, retailer codes of practice, and labelling regulations.
  • High attention to detail with strong organisational and record-keeping skills.
  • Confident communicator with the ability to work across departments.
  • Capable of managing multiple priorities and working independently.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and experienced with online specification systems.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Degree or diploma in Food Science, Food Technology, or a similar subject.
  • Experience working with major UK retailers and their specification systems.
  • Familiarity with BRCGS standards and UK food legislation.
