Job description

This is a Speciality Doctor appointment for the United Lincolnshire Hospitals NHS Trust based at Pilgrim Hospital in Boston.

This is a replacement post for which the person appointed will be required to devote substantially the whole of their time to the duties of the post.

The United Lincoln Hospitals Trust provides ophthalmic services to a population in excess of 750,000. The service is based in two main sites in Boston and Lincoln. Peripheral sites in Grantham, Louth, Gainsborough attached to the Lincoln site and Skegness and Spalding attached to the Boston site provide additional outpatient services.

This post is based at the Pilgrim Hospital Boston with some duties in the peripheral sites attached.

Main duties of the job

The Appointee will be expected, in conjunction with his / her colleagues, to provide a comprehensive Ophthalmic service supporting the provision of an effective countywide service and contribute towards achieving the 18 week wait across the whole eye department.

He/she will provide leadership to support the continued delivery of a first class Ophthalmic service.

The appointee will take part in the Middle Grade on-call rota for emergency duties and provide, on a reciprocal basis, emergency cover for colleagues during periods of absence.

He/she will be expected to carry out teaching duties as required and take an active part in the Postgraduate Medical Education programme and in the teaching of ophthalmic trainee staff. They will regularly attend Clinical Audit and Departmental Team meetings.

The appointee will have continuing responsibility for patients in his / her care and for the proper functioning of the department.

He/she will be required to play an active part in the robust clinical audit programme in operation within the Department and to take part in regional and national audits. He/she will be required to report all critical incidents and attend and support the Departmental audit and Clinical Governance meetings.

The appointee will be expected to offer a general ophthalmology service. In particular the delivery of high volume cataract surgery is expected ensuring the Trust meets its contractual obligations with respect to the 18 week wait.

THE POST

This is a Speciality Doctor appointment for the United Lincolnshire Hospitals NHS Trust based at Pilgrim Hospital in Boston, but it is a condition of the appointment that the post holder will be willing to work in any of the Trusts locations or outreach district general hospital clinics.

SPECIALITY DOCTOR IN OPHTHALMOLOGY

This is a replacement post for which the person appointed will be required to devote substantially the whole of their time to the duties of the post.

Applicants may elect to work whole time or part time. If the successful applicant chooses to work part time, modification of the job content will be discussed on a personal basis with the Trust.

The post has been developed to assist in the delivery and expansion of the current service and to cope with the increasing demands in the wider field of Medical Retina and Glaucoma. The post holder will also help the department meet the challenges of the 18 week wait.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

They will be involved in the education of nursing staff, and other clinical professions as appropriate. They will regularly attend Clinical Audit and Departmental Team meetings.

  • FRCS, FRCOphth or equivalent (2)
  • Current GMC certificate (2)

  • Relevant higher degree or equivalent

Training/Experience/Research
Essential

  • Proven clinical experience in ophthalmology with a broad experience of the specialty - minimum of six years.
  • Experience of and undertaken Clinical Audit, with recently presented findings (2) Desirable criteria

Desirable

  • Evidence of recently published research or case reports.

  • Good communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Demonstrate the ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team
