Job description

Job summary

The Department of Women's Health Services provides a comprehensive Obstetrics and Gynaecology service for local residents. In addition to the full range of general services there are also a number of established subspecialty activities in the fields of Fetal Medicine, Minimal Access Surgery and Gynaecological Oncology. The Directorate works closely with other local Departments, particularly that at Guys/St. Thomas' and King's College Hospital.

The Department is fully committed to women's choice and autonomy, and midwifery management of normal pregnancy. There is currently a particularly skilled group of midwifery managers leading the process of change in midwifery practice. The obstetric practice is however generally high risk due to the nature of the local population, requiring significant medical involvement in a substantial proportion of pregnancies.

The maternity service achieved a CQC rating of good in 2023 with a leadership rating of outstanding. Within the past few years various social and demographic changes have resulted in changes in the population we serve and a birth rate of around 7200/annum across the two sites: 4200 at QEH and 3500 at UHL.

Main duties of the job

The post will be for a senior clinician (ST6/7 or post CCT) in Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust, primarily working at Queen Lizabeth Hospital. The post-holder will get an excellent opportunity to improve and consolidate surgical and non-surgical skills within the speciality.

The post-holder will be given an opportunity to further their special interests, will be encouraged to complete relevant SITMS in keeping these interests and will be supported to CESR if this is desired. The post-holder is expected to conduct audit and research in the department.

The post-holder will participate in the resident on-call rota for Senior Registrars (ST6/7) in both Obstetrics and gynaecology, when they will be expected to do Obstetrics at a senior level (third-on call). Clinical fellows will be expected to provide active senior medical input into the management of pre-operative/post-operative patients and Gynaecological emergencies.
