Job summary

Southampton City Council’s Young People’s Service and Youth Justice Service are looking for a Specialist Education and Pathways Tutor to join our Education, Skills and Employability Team. This role focuses on flexible learning, practical activities and progression for young people.

You will work with young people who may have had disrupted education, delivering personalised education, accredited and non-accredited learning, and establishing new pathways.

Responsibilities

Could you use your educational, vocational or industry experience to help young people discover their strengths and develop the skills they need for their future?

Southampton City Council’s Young People’s Service and Youth Justice Service are looking for a creative, adaptable and committed Specialist Education and Pathways Tutor to join our Education, Skills and Employability Team.

You might be a teacher or tutor, but you could equally come from vocational training, outdoor education, youth work, mentoring, employability support, careers education or an industry-based learning environment. What matters most is your ability to engage young people, turn practical experiences into meaningful learning and help them progress towards education, training and employment.

This is not a traditional classroom-based tutoring role. Although you may provide individual and small-group learning, you will also help develop and deliver practical and innovative opportunities in a range of settings. This could include working alongside young people on site, using outdoor and vocational activities to build skills, and helping to establish new skills development and progression pathways.

You will work with children and young people who may have experienced disrupted education, exclusion, special educational needs, trauma, poor attendance, exploitation, offending behaviour or other challenges that have affected their learning journey.

Through flexible, creative and relationship-based practice, you will help young people reconnect with learning, recognise their strengths, build confidence and take meaningful steps towards a positive future.

About the role

As a Specialist Education and Pathways Tutor, you will create and deliver flexible learning opportunities that respond to young people’s individual strengths, interests, needs and aspirations.

Your work may include personalised education and accredited learning, but it will also involve practical, vocational and real-world activities. You will work directly alongside young people, helping them understand, develop and evidence the skills they gain through different experiences.
