Job summary

Portsmouth City Council’s Community Learning Service at The Learning Place seeks an English Functional Skills Tutor. You will design and deliver Entry Level to Level 2 English courses, assess learners, monitor progress, and maintain records. You’ll guide progression opportunities and foster an inclusive learning environment.

You will embed maths, English, digital skills and employability into lessons, collaborate with partners, support volunteers and help promote the service locally.

Qualifications

  • Holds Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and related subject qualifications.
  • Ability to embed maths, English, digital skills and employability into teaching.
  • Good understanding of safeguarding responsibilities and the Education Inspection Framework.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and deliver engaging Entry Level, Level 1 and Level 2 English courses.
  • Assess and support learners to achieve their goals and monitor progress.
  • Maintain high-quality learner records and provide progression information.
  • Create an inclusive and safe learning environment and support volunteers.

Your new role

Join our Community Learning Service at The Learning Place and help adults develop the English skills they need to progress in learning, employment and everyday life. As an English Functional Skills Tutor, you will develop and deliver engaging Entry Level, Level 1 and Level 2 English courses, assess and support learners to achieve their goals, monitor progress and maintain high-quality learner records. You will provide information and guidance on progression opportunities, create an inclusive and safe learning environment, contribute to service improvement through learner feedback and performance data, support volunteers, develop partnership opportunities, and help promote the service within the local community.

Who is the person summary:

We are looking for a qualified and passionate teacher with experience of delivering high-quality learning to diverse groups of learners. You will hold Qualified Teacher Status and relevant subject qualifications, with a strong ability to embed maths, English, digital skills and employability into your teaching. You will have a sound understanding of the Education Inspection Framework, safeguarding responsibilities, and the Professional Standards for Teachers and Trainers, alongside experience working with awarding organisations and hard-to-reach learners. As an excellent communicator with strong organisational, problem-solving and IT skills, you will be adaptable, collaborative and committed to continuous professional development, ensuring learners receive engaging, inclusive and effective learning experiences that support their success.
