Job description

About The Role

Job Title: Specialist Speech and Language Therapist

Job Location: Oakwood College, Torpoint (PL11)

Salary: The full-time equivalent salary for this role is between £38,005.50 and £45,513 per annum. However, as this position is for 22.5 hours per week over 42 weeks per year, the salary will be pro-rated accordingly.

Contract Type: Permanent – Term Time Only

Are you a Specialist Speech and Language Therapist looking to make a lasting impact?

In this role, you’ll play a crucial part in supporting learners with Learning Disabilities and/or Autism, helping to develop the essential communication skills they need to flourish, grow, and prepare for independent living, work, and life.

Each day kicks off with a collaborative morning briefing, where you'll share insights and receive updates on the progress from our incredible team. From there, your day could involve conducting 1:1 therapy sessions, leading group activities, or working alongside teachers in the classroom to embed communication strategies. Every interaction is an opportunity to make a real difference.

You’ll also have the chance to mentor and supervise less experienced Speech and Language Therapists, sharing your expertise to elevate the quality of support we provide. Plus, you’ll contribute to developing training materials for staff and support university students on placement, helping to broaden the understanding of communication development across the team.

We understand how important it is for you to have protected time for your clinical development ensuring you have the support needed to give learners the highest level of care.

This is your opportunity to help young adults build confidence, reach their full potential, and make a lasting impact on their future.

A day in the life of a Specialist Speech and Language Therapist will involve:

  1. Taking a trauma informed approach to clinical work. You’ll work with a small caseload of learners who will have varying Learning, Communication, sensory processing, and social interaction needs. You’ll be able to do this through 1-2-1 support, classroom work and group sessions.
  2. Taking an active role in the admissions process for new learners, including helping to write pen portraits.
  3. Working with the wider team to offer the best support to our learners, including our onsite creative art therapists, teachers, and teaching assistants, and taking part in Multidisciplinary team meetings. This work may include supervisions, training, or taking part in projects related to the work we do.
  4. Administration. Whilst doing all your great work with the learners, we’ll need you to keep their records up to date and carry out all the administrative tasks you’d expect to come with this role. Don’t worry though, during the school holidays you can work from home so that you have the space to do this without it impacting the time you spend with the learners.

To be a successful Specialist Speech and Language Therapist, you’ll need:

  1. A recognised Degree in Speech and Language Therapy, along with HCPC Registration and membership with the Royal College of Speech and Language.
  2. At least 3 years of experience working as a Speech and Language Therapist.
  3. The desire and confidence to run supervisions, training, and support both experienced and less experienced Speech and Language Therapists.
  4. Good IT skills – We’ll train you on how to use our systems, but it would help if you had a working understanding of using Microsoft packages like Excel, Word, Outlook and Teams.
  5. A full driving licence. Whilst this role is based in a single location, there will be times that you need to attend meetings offsite which would require the use of a vehicle.

If you have experience working within the NHS, the best way for us to describe the level of experience needed for this role would be to consider it a “Band 6” position. However, if you are a “Band 5” with experience, we can offer a development pathway to help you progress to a “Band 6” Specialist role.

In return for your time, you’ll get:

  1. Holidays – You’ll work 42 weeks of the year during term time, but you’ll be paid annual leave to cover the remaining 5.6 weeks. (If you are part-time, you’ll get a Pro Rata amount based on your hours).
  2. Pension scheme– Our pension scheme is based on you paying in 5%, and us adding 3%.
  3. Learning & Development Opportunities – We provide comprehensive learning opportunities for team members to develop themselves.
  4. Discounts – You’ll have access to brilliant discounts through the Blue Light Card and our own employee benefits platform.
  5. Wellbeing Support – Your wellbeing is always our priority. You’ll have access to mental health and wellbeing support. On top of this, our therapies team offers a monthly confidential check in clinic, and group reflective practice sessions.
  6. Cycle2Work -The cycle to work scheme enables you to buy a bicycle at a discounted rate.
  7. DBS – As this role required you to have an enhanced DBS carried out, we will cover this cost.
  8. After 12 months service - You’ll also be eligible for our Medicash scheme which covers a wide range of medical, health and wellbeing expenses (Including immediate access to a GP!). You’ll get life assurance paid at x2 your annual salary.

Please note that as part of our safer recruitment processes, successful applicants will be subject to pre-employment checks including an enhanced disclosure and barring service (DBS) check, and online and social media checks, and reference validation.

At Phoenix Learning and Care, we pride ourselves on our diverse workforce, and ensuring we have an inclusive environment for all our team members. We remain committed to ensuring our teams can bring their true selves to work without risk or fear of discrimination.
