Job overview

Northumbria Healthcare NHS Trust Paediatric Physiotherapy service and Wheelchair Service have created an exciting post which aims to form a seamless service for the paediatric population. This is a full-time post with a 50/50 split between both services.

The post holder must have paediatric physiotherapy experience at either an experienced Band 6 or Band 7 level. It would be beneficial but not essential to have previous wheelchair experience. Training in this area will be provided.

Main duties of the job

• To deliver Physiotherapy treatment for a complex caseload within a specialist field.
• To provide highly specialised physiotherapy assessment, diagnosis and treatment using advanced clinical reasoning skills.
• To provide clinical education, supervision and support to staff and students within the speciality areas.
• To provide specialist advice to families, carers, other health and social care professionals and/or education services.
• To contribute to planning, development and auditing of the Physiotherapy and wheelchair services within the specialist area.
• To supervise qualified & unqualified staff within the specialist team.
• To role model compassionate and inclusive leadership in order to shape the creation of a collective leadership culture within the trust.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The post holder will hold a Paediatric Physiotherapy caseload of children aged 0-19 with complex neurological problems based at Hexham Hospital. They will undertake assessments and treatment of children and young people working in various settings including patients' homes and schools. To provide a highly specialised paediatric physiotherapy service for children with a variety of complex and challenging conditions.

• To provide specialist advice to families, carers, other health and social care professionals and education services.
• To maintain effective communication with the multidisciplinary team, including providing advice for Education, Health and Care plans within the defined time frame.
• To contribute to planning, development and auditing of the Paediatric Physiotherapy service and Wheelchair service within the trust, holding responsibility for defined projects.
• To attend in-service training and clinical support and supervision.
• To clinically supervise qualified, unqualified staff and students within the Paediatric Physiotherapy and Wheelchair services.

Qualifications

Essential criteria

• BSC Honours degree in Physiotherapy or equivalent
• Member of the Health Professionals Council
• Student training qualification
• Recognised qualification and experience in the supervision of undergraduate students.

Desirable criteria

• Member of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy
• Working towards Masters level or equivalent accredited courses within chosen speciality e.g. Action Research, McKenzie accredited practitioner, Injection Diploma, Continence Diploma, Accredited Respiratory Care Management.
• Leadership training e.g. LEO/ILM

Essential Criteria

• It is an essential requirement of the role that the post holder has a valid driving licence and is either a car owner and able to use the car for work purposes, or has a Trust personal lease vehicle which may be used for the role. However, the Trust would consider making reasonable adjustments to the role, if necessary, to enable a disabled person to undertake the role.

Experience and Knowledge

Essential criteria

• Evidence of significant post-graduate education, knowledge and clinical skills in the specialist field.
• Knowledge of relevant Department of Health initiatives and ability to implement National Service Frameworks.
• To be a member of relevant local or Trust wide specialist interest group or journal club.
• Varied experience in the assessment and management of complex conditions.
• Substantial post graduate experience.
