Job summary

Royal Surrey NHS Foundation Trust is seeking an experienced pharmacist to join the Pharmacy Aseptic Services Unit on a fixed-term contract until 30 April 2027. The role involves professional leadership for Aseptic Services and overseeing non-cancer clinical screening and supervision of junior pharmacists.

You will work with the Head of Production and Lead Pharmacist to develop the service, manage QA, and support implementation of new technologies in a state-of-the-art unit.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic pharmacist to join the team in our Pharmacy Aseptic Services Unit. This is a fixed term contract ending on 30/04/2027.

The Pharmacy Aseptic Unit supplies around 50,000 products per annum. We are in the process of building a new Aseptic Unit with state-of-the-art equipment and technology to enable the Trust to provide advanced therapies and participate in gene therapy clinical trials.

You would work closely with the Head of Production and the Lead Pharmacist for the management and strategic development of the service, and with Quality Assurance to support the operation of the Quality Management System. You would take responsibility for the professional aspects of the service, overseeing the non-cancer clinical screening and supervising junior pharmacists.

There would be the opportunity to continue to develop clinical pharmacy knowledge and skills via a regular ward or Royal Surrey Cancer Centre Pharmacy commitment.

You should be a team player with the ability to introduce change. Your personal commitment to training and development will be supported by our dedicated team of specialist pharmacists and technicians. Previous experience in aseptic services is required.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

• Liaise with the Aseptic Services Manager and other senior pharmacy managers, for the long term strategic development of the Pharmacy Aseptic Service.
• Responsible for developing training programmes for all staff working the Aseptic Services department.
• Responsible for the development and management of software based systems within the Aseptic Services department ensuring that they are risk assessed, including electronic prescribing, new labelling systems etc.
• Responsible for all professional aspects of the service, including legal and ethical, within the Aseptic Services department.
• Contribute to the development of products and services, with the Aseptic Services Manager, to ensure that the requirements of customers (both external and internal) are optimised.

Qualifications

• Post-graduate certificate in Pharmacy Practice or equivalent experience
• Registration with the General Pharmaceutical Council
• Higher degree/Diploma in Clinical Pharmacy or equivalent experience

Knowledge

• Professional knowledge acquired through vocational Masters degree in Pharmacy (4 years) plus one year’s pre-registration experience.
• Understanding of the principles of Good Manufacturing Practice, Quality Assurance and Good Clinical Practice.
• Good core therapeutic knowledge to include the following competencies: Delivery of Patient care; Problem Solving; Personal; Management and organisation.
• Knowledge of current developments in Aseptic Services and Oncology Practice as well as the wider NHS
• One year’s pre-registration experience.
• Post registration experience of sufficient quality and quantity to enable demonstration of achievement in all aspects of the General Level Framework
• Experience of working in an aseptic dispensing environment to have an established portfolio of making and supervision of the making of a variety of products including chemotherapy, CIVAs and TPN at a minimum
• Experience in a pharmacy aseptics unit
• Experience in delivering training and education of staff
• Documented evidence of completed project work, audit, clinical trials and practice research
• Experience of supervision of staff
• Delivery of care to a defined group of patients, including cancer patients
• Awareness of the application of research into aseptic services practice
• Management experience in areas such as recruitment, appraisal, sickness monitoring
