Job summary

Royal Papworth Hospital NHS Foundation Trust is seeking a Specialist Medical Engineering Practitioner (Electronics) to maintain and service a wide range of electrical/electronic medical devices. The role is site-based at Cambridge, requires calm under pressure, and reports to the Head of Clinical Engineering.

You will perform preventative maintenance, calibrations and testing, maintain data records, and adhere to safety and quality standards, including involvement in the on-call rota.

Qualifications

• BEng or equivalent in an appropriate subject and professional registration.
• Incorporated level Engineer or equivalent membership of relevant body.
• Registration as clinical technologist and ongoing professional development.
• Experience with medical equipment in NHS, private or international sectors.
• Ability to use Excel and Word; awareness of quality systems and risk management.
• Able to communicate complex information clearly to diverse audiences.

Responsibilities

• Preventative maintenance, servicing, repair, calibration and acceptance testing on electrical/electronic equipment.
• Accurate data input into the equipment management system and documentation.
• Communicate effectively to stakeholders to ensure understanding of equipment status.
• Support colleagues and work within health and safety regulations.
• Participate in the Clinical Engineering On-Call rota for out-of-hours advice and repair.

Clinical Engineering (CE) provides services to ensure that the Trusts medical devices are operating effectively and safely with the minimum of downtime. Medical devices include all electrical, electronic, mechanical, and medical gas systems used to diagnose and treat patients.

The role is site based (at RPH), covering core service hours on a rota system and is responsible to the Head of Clinical Engineering.

Main duties of the job

• Preventative maintenance, servicing, repair, calibration and acceptance testing on a wide range of equipment within the electrical / electronic sphere
• Written/verbal communication for both simple and complex medical device related information in such a way as to ensure the stakeholders full understanding and comprehension, and to minimise any barrier(s) in understanding
• Support other team members when required with work that falls outside of own expertise and seek support and advice if needed
• Accurate data input into the CE department equipment management system
• Work to and maintain a good knowledge of appropriate legislation(s), policies and procedures and quality standards
• Adhere to health and safety regulations
• Participation in the Clinical Engineering On-Call rota is a requirement of the role. The post-holder must be available and contactable on a rota basis out of hours for urgent advice and repair if require of medical equipment.

Qualifications

• B Eng or equivalent in appropriate subject
• Incorporated level Engineer or equivalent professional membership of relevant professional body
• Registration as clinical technologist

Experience

• Extensive practical experience in Medical engineering workshop practices and techniques
• experience of medical equipment support in either the NHS, UK private sector or Overseas medical equipment support sector
• Specialised knowledge of defibrillation, multi-parameter, infusion, cardiology and radiology products
• Broad knowledge of medical device operation and management
• Experience in applying workshop technology to patient critical equipment and techniques in healthcare
• High level of understanding of patient and staff risks arising from equipment failure
• Able to communicate complex information in a variety of operational environments
• Able to deal with complex and unpredictable situations
• Able to prioritise, manage own work and that of others and to be able to work unsupervised
• Able to exercise initiative when dealing with issues within own specialist area of competence
