Job summary

Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is seeking an Engineering Shift Manager to lead an integrated team responsible for diagnosis, first-line repairs, and supervision of maintenance on electrical and mechanical systems across Addenbrooke’s and Rosie Hospitals.

You will manage multi-skilled work, coordinate with clinical services, and ensure safety and reliability of plant equipment, BMS, and HV systems while supporting 24/7 operations.

Job overview

The Engineering Shift Manager will form part of an integrated team and will have both individual and group responsibilities.

You will carry out AP (Authorized Persons) Duties for Confined Space and CP (Competent Person) for disciplines as identified in key duties and responsibilities below.

Responsible Manager for the diagnosis and first line repairs to breakdowns in electrical and mechanical engineering plant equipment (including BMS) and to deal with new situations as they arise. This is to include the supervision of the work carried out by the Fast Response team during core hours

The post holder will also be responsible for coordinating activities for operational needs and to ensure alignment, connectivity and engagement with services within the Trust.

They will perform work which is often complex and multi skilled and take responsibility for the completion of works in line with service requirements.

They will provide technical assistance for mechanical and electrical staff when required. Responsible for fault finding and repair on a wide range of engineering plant and equipment (Low Pressure Domestic Hot Water Systems, Heating systems, Ventilation systems (including theatre vent), Plate Heat Exchangers, Medical Gas Pipe Systems) and all other associated hospital plant and equipment.

They will monitor and respond to alarms and rectify faults from the BEMS, Air tube and Fire Alarm systems

Main duties of the job

Liaise and maintain effective working relationships with Estates and Facilities management, be the first point of contact for Clinical Managers, Heads of Departments and Ward Sisters in all matters relating to Estates Operational Services.

Responsible Manager for the diagnosis and first line repairs to breakdowns in electrical and mechanical engineering plant and equipment, to deal with new situations as they arise.

Understand the workings of all critical, specialist and non-specialist mechanical and electrical systems in Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Rosie Hospital and the ATC.

Competently deal with new, unusual and emergency situations as they arise, following department guidelines and training.

Liaise with engineering managerial staff regarding plant or equipment failures and to request the supply of goods and/or services as necessary.

Monitor and adjust the Trust Building Management System in accordance with service requirements. Respond and take appropriate action when alarm conditions are raised.

Out of hours liaise with On Call Managers and call out appropriate members of staff or contractors in the event of emergency situation.

Any other duties which may be required from time to time as service demands dictate.

You will be responsible for the Out of Hours management and control of the Estates and Facilities Maintenance Staff and Estates contractors.

Qualificationa
  • HNC technical level qualification in electrical or mechanical craft discipline or equivalent relevant experience.
  • Recognised time served apprenticeship
  • HND/Degree Technical level qualification in electrical or mechanical craft discipline
Experience
  • Experience of workload assessments and allocation.
  • Demonstrable experience of working in an industrial environment.
  • Proven experience of Electrical/mechanical Services Systems Maintenance.
  • Previous supervisory and management experience in a customer focussed environment required.
  • Experience of opening and plotting engineering drawings using MiCad/AutoCad.
  • Experience of hospital plant & equipment.
