We are looking for an enthusiastic, innovative adaptable clinical psychologist keen to develop experience, knowledge and skills in working in Paediatric Specialties . The permanent post holder will be contributing to the care provided by the lifetime Barth Syndrome Service (0.2FTE) and to the paediatric gastroenterology (0.65FTE) service. There may be additional funding to increase this to 0.85FTE). This is a Band 8A post but could be offered as a Band 7 preceptorship. As a department we offer a full preceptorship development program supervised by the senior psychology team to support development to Band 8A.

As a large department Psychological Health Services provides clinical psychology services to a wide range of specialist multidisciplinary teams. Main duties of the job

To develop and provide access to specialist clinical health psychology services for young people and adolescents based o n assessment of psychological needs to generate individualised psychological care programmes. Care will be d elivered through direct and indirect clinical work based in outpatient and inpatient clinical settings. This will include the use of psychometric cognitive assessments

To provide formal and informal teaching and training for other professionals on psychological knowledge and skills applicable in the direct and indirect care of young people, adults and families with physical health conditions

Qualifications and Training
  • Postgraduate qualification in clinical or counselling psychology recognised for registration by the HCPC as Practitioner Psychologist – Clinical/Counselling Psychologist
  • Current registration with HCPC
Knowledge and Experience
  • Experience of working with children/young people who have a physical health condition
  • Post qualification experience of clinical work within a health care setting, with individuals who have an acute/long-term medical conditions
  • Post qualification experience of working as a practitioner psychologist providing psychological consultation, case management supervision and training to multi-professional and multi-agency teams
  • Post qualification experience of working as a practitioner psychologist undertaking consultation and service development work within a multi-disciplinary physical health setting
  • Formal teaching / presentation sessions to health and other professionals
  • Demonstrable understanding of the implications of acute and long term health conditions for children/young people and their families
  • Demonstrable knowledge of legislation and guidance pertaining to safeguarding of children and vulnerable adults, consent, confidentiality and standards of psychological care within relevant NICE and other guidance
  • Doctoral level knowledge of research design and methodology
  • Experience of supervising qualified practitioner psychologists
  • Accredited supervision training
  • Experience of working with children/young people in a paediatric service
Skills and Abilities
  • Ability to assess the psychological needs of children, young people , adults and their families, including the use of cognitive and developmental psychometric tests
  • Ability to generate systemic and individual psychological formulations and interventions based on applying psychological theories and models to the complex information generated by the child, adult family, health and social care systems
  • Advanced communication skills with the ability to provide and receive highly complex and sensitive information to and from children, young people and their families in a developmentally and culturally appropriate manner in highly emotive situations. This will include the ability to provide complex psychological information to staff in an accessible manner
  • Ability to access, record and manage information and data pertaining to the work undertaken in medical and psychology notes, data bases and electronic records as required
  • Ability to prioritise and manage available time for clinical work and professional activities effectively and safely
  • Able to travel to regional clinics, meetings and home visits if required
