Job summary

Northern Health and Social Care Trust in Antrim is seeking a Biomedical Scientist (Band 5/6) to join the Surgery, Women’s Health and Diagnostic Services Directorate. The post involves analysis and reporting of blood, urine and related samples, with potential for 24-hour service within a 37.5 hour week.

To qualify, HCPC registration as Biomedical Scientist is required, with IBMS Specialist Diploma targeted within 3 years; progression to Band 6 depends on Diploma completion and competency

Qualifications

• HCPC registration as Biomedical Scientist is required.
• IBMS Specialist Diploma within 36 months of registration.
• Band 6 progression requires IBMS Diploma and competency attainment.

Responsibilities

• Assist in day-to-day running of the laboratory section to which assigned.
• Undertake general duties under supervision or as directed by senior staff.
• Participate in laboratory research and development schedules.
• Support departmental projects for improvement and quality.
• Rotate through sections of the laboratory as assigned.
• Understand and apply Quality Control procedures for each section.
• Adhere to Laboratory Health and Safety policies.
• Assist in training trainee/entry level staff.
• Ensure accurate and timely reporting of tests, including out-of-hours.
• Ensure accurate data entry in laboratory IT systems and data storage.
• Perform preventive maintenance of equipment and maintain logs.
• Troubleshoot equipment and liaise with service engineers.
• Participate in method and instrument evaluation.
• Contribute to maintaining UKAS Accreditation by quality management.
