Job summary

Empowering Learning Ltd in Leeds (Wetherby LS22) is seeking a compassionate SEN Teaching Assistant to support children with additional needs in our primary school. You will work with the class teacher and SENDCo to help pupils access learning and develop wellbeing in a nurturing, inclusive environment.

Responsibilities include adapting activities, supporting one-to-one or small groups, assisting with EHCPs, monitoring progress, and safeguarding.

Qualifications

  • GCSEs (or equivalent) in English and Maths.
  • Willingness to undertake an Enhanced DBS check.
  • Experience working with children, ideally in a primary or SEND setting.

  • Support pupils with SEN, delivering learning activities and building confidence.
  • Adapt activities to meet individual needs under the class teacher's guidance.
  • Encourage independence, positive behaviour and inclusive participation.
  • Help implement EHCPs and individual support plans.
  • Collaborate with teachers, SENDCo, parents and external professionals.
  • Monitor pupil progress and maintain records as required.
  • Support pupils during lessons, break times and visits.

Special Educational Needs (SEN) Teaching Assistant

Location: Leeds, Wetherby
Contract: Full-time, term time only
Salary:£19,000 to £23,000 pro rata

We are seeking a compassionate, patient and enthusiastic Special Educational Needs (SEN) Teaching Assistant to join our friendly primary school in Leeds based in Wetherby LS22. This is a rewarding opportunity to make a meaningful difference to the lives of children with additional needs by supporting their learning, development and wellbeing in a nurturing and inclusive environment.

About the Role

Working closely with the class teacher and SENDCo, you will provide high-quality support to pupils with a range of special educational needs, helping them to access learning, build confidence and achieve their full potential. You may work on a one-to-one basis, with small groups or within the classroom to deliver targeted support.

Key Responsibilities
  • Support pupils with a range of special educational needs, including autism, ADHD, speech and language needs, social, emotional and mental health needs, and learning difficulties.
  • Adapt learning activities to meet individual needs under the guidance of the class teacher.
  • Encourage pupils' independence, confidence and positive behaviour.
  • Help implement Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs) and individual support plans.
  • Work collaboratively with teachers, the SENDCo, parents and external professionals.
  • Monitor pupil progress and maintain accurate records where required.
  • Promote a safe, caring and inclusive learning environment.
  • Support pupils during lessons, breaktimes and educational visits when appropriate.
About You

The successful candidate will be:

  • Committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children.
  • Experience working with children, ideally within a primary school or SEND setting.
  • A good understanding of supporting children with additional needs.
  • GCSEs (or equivalent) in English and Maths.
  • Willingness to undertake an Enhanced DBS check.
Desirable Qualifications and Experience
  • Level 2 or Level 3 Teaching Assistant qualification (or equivalent). You may apply unqualfified to be considered
  • Experience supporting pupils with autism, ADHD or communication needs.
  • Training in behaviour support, Team Teach, Makaton, PECS or similar.
  • Knowledge of safeguarding procedures within education.
