BT Group is seeking a Lead Engineer to provide technical leadership for our Engineering Platform. You will be hands-on and mentor engineers while guiding platform delivery across BT and partner teams.

You'll work with AWS, Kubernetes and Terraform, review designs, and help shape best practices in automation, CI/CD and DevSecOps to deliver scalable, secure engineering outcomes.

Qualifications

• Experience in a Lead/Principal/Staff level role with delivery responsibility.
• Hands-on AWS in large-scale production environments.
• Strong Kubernetes experience.
• Terraform and Infrastructure as Code expertise.
• Background in Platform/Cloud Engineering, DevOps or SRE.
• Recent software development experience and ability to review code.
• Proven leadership in engineering delivery and architectural decisions.
• Strong coaching, mentoring and stakeholder management skills.
• Experience working with distributed teams or third‑party suppliers.
• Excellent communication with technical and non‑technical stakeholders.

Responsibilities

About the role

At BT, we're building an Engineering Platform designed to improve the developer experience and enable engineering teams to deliver software more efficiently, securely and consistently across the organisation.

We're looking for a Lead Engineer to provide technical leadership for this high-profile platform. This is a hands‑on engineering role where you'll help complete the current build, lead technical delivery activities and support the platform's ongoing evolution following handover from our technology partners.

You’ll work closely with engineers, architects, product teams, stakeholders and third‑party partners to ensure the platform is scalable, secure and delivers value to engineering teams across BT. Alongside hands‑on engineering, you’ll mentor colleagues, review designs and code, and help establish engineering best practices across the team.

What you’ll be doing

• Provide technical leadership for BT's Engineering Platform and help shape its future direction.
• Work hands‑on with AWS, Kubernetes and Terraform to deliver platform capabilities.
• Review code, designs and engineering solutions to ensure quality and alignment with standards.
• Lead technical discussions and provide guidance to engineers across the wider team.
• Collaborate with TechM, AWS and internal BT teams to support successful platform delivery and transition.
• Support integration activities between the platform and BT systems.
• Champion engineering best practices including automation, Infrastructure as Code, CI/CD and DevSecOps.
• Mentor and coach engineers, helping to develop capability across the team.
• Provide technical assurance and act as a trusted technical subject matter expert.
• Work closely with Product Managers, Architects and stakeholders to translate requirements into technical solutions.

Essential Skills / Experience

• Strong experience in a Lead Engineer, Principal Engineer, Staff Engineer, Technical Lead or similar role.
• Hands‑on AWS experience within large‑scale production environments.
• Strong Kubernetes experience.
• Strong Terraform and Infrastructure as Code experience.
• Experience working within Platform Engineering, Cloud Engineering, DevOps or Site Reliability Engineering environments.
• Recent software engineering or development experience.
• Experience leading engineering delivery and making key technical decisions.
• Experience reviewing code, designs and engineering standards.
• Strong coaching, mentoring and technical leadership skills.
• Experience working with third‑party suppliers or distributed engineering teams.
• Excellent stakeholder management and communication skills.

Desirable Skills / Experience

• Experience building or supporting internal developer platforms.
• Knowledge of GitLab and modern CI/CD tooling.
• Experience with Sonatype or similar software supply chain security tools.
• Knowledge of DevSecOps practices.
• Experience within large‑scale enterprise transformation programmes.
• Experience working within Agile delivery environments and using Jira.
• AWS or Kubernetes certifications.
