Job description

Computer Science - Wolfson Building, Parks Road, Oxford, OX1 3QD

*** This role is for Internal Applicants Only ***

The Department of Computer Science at the University of Oxford is seeking an experienced Software Engineering Lead to establish and lead its Software Solutions capability.

This is an opportunity to take technical ownership of a diverse portfolio of business-critical software systems that support teaching, research and departmental operations. The portfolio includes modern web applications, bespoke information systems, integrations and legacy platforms that are actively being modernised.

Working closely with the IT Manager, you will define the technical direction of the Department's software portfolio, lead software engineering activities, establish engineering standards, and mentor future members of the Software Solutions unit. You will combine hands-on software engineering with technical leadership, helping shape how software is developed, deployed and maintained across the Department.

This role would suit an experienced software engineer who enjoys solving complex technical problems, improving engineering practices and working closely with users to deliver high-quality software. You will have the opportunity to influence architecture, modernise long-standing systems and help build a sustainable engineering capability within one of the world's leading computer science departments.

We are looking for someone with strong full-stack software engineering experience, excellent technical judgement and a passion for building maintainable, well-engineered software. Experience working with Linux-based platforms and collaborating with infrastructure teams will be valuable, as will an interest in learning specialist technologies used within the Department.

In return, you'll join a collaborative IT team with considerable autonomy, work on technically interesting and varied systems, and have the opportunity to make a lasting impact on the Department's software landscape.
