Job summary

Northumberland County Council is seeking an experienced social worker to join the Substance and Alcohol Team (SaAT) within Adults, Ageing & Wellbeing. You will undertake comprehensive assessments, manage a caseload, and work with health professionals to promote wellbeing and recovery.

The role offers training, supervision, and opportunities to handle safeguarding and complex cases, contributing to safer communities across Northumberland.

Qualifications

  • Degree in Social Work & registered with Social Work England.
  • UK driving licence is essential for the role.
  • Post-qualification experience or completion of the ASYE programme is required.

Responsibilities

  • Carry out comprehensive assessments and manage your own caseload with supervision.
  • Work collaboratively with health professionals, voluntary sector partners and community services.
  • Develop expertise in safeguarding and substance misuse interventions with training opportunities.

About the role

You’ll be part of a team dedicated specifically to supporting adults affected by substance and alcohol misuse, making a real difference to some of the most vulnerable individuals in our communities. You will support service users to improve wellbeing and try to promote and achieve abstinence and recovery contributing to safer and healthier communities across Northumberland.


This role offers the chance to work collaboratively with health professionals from specialist services, voluntary sector partners, and community services to deliver person-centred support. You’ll develop expertise in complex safeguarding and substance misuse interventions, with access to comprehensive training and development opportunities.


In this role, you will conduct comprehensive assessments and enjoy a healthy balance of autonomy and support. You’ll manage your own caseload while receiving regular supervision and consistent guidance from your Team Manager. A clear understanding of the Care Act and the Local Authority’s statutory duties is essential.

  • Degree in Social Work & registered with Social Work England

  • Successfully completed the UK Skills for Care ASYE programme

  • It is an essential requirement of the role that the post holder has a valid UK driving licence and is either a car owner or can use a car for work purposes.
