Job summary

HS2 Ltd. is seeking a Senior MEP Engineer based in Birmingham to act as the technical authority for mechanical, electrical and public health design across HS2 assets.

The role requires Chartered Engineer status or working towards, with strong knowledge of building services and infrastructure MEP systems. You will work with design, construction and commissioning teams to ensure compliance with standards, review designs, support testing, handover and risk management on a major infrastructure

Qualifications

  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering or Building Services related discipline.
  • Chartered Engineer (CEng) status or working towards it.
  • Strong knowledge of building services and infrastructure MEP systems.

Responsibilities

  • Act as the MEP Subject Matter Expert for allocated HS2 assets and works.
  • Provide technical leadership on mechanical, electrical and public health engineering matters.
  • Review design deliverables, specifications, calculations and methodologies.
  • Support design assurance and technical approval processes.
  • Ensure MEP systems comply with HS2 standards and regulations.
  • Manage interfaces between MEP and other disciplines.
  • Support installation, testing, commissioning, validation and handover activities.
  • Identify risks and value engineering opportunities.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders and supply chain partners.

Job description

HS2, Britain’s new high-speed railway is at peak construction. Balfour Beatty VINCI is HS2’s construction partner in the Midlands, responsible for delivering 90km of the route, from Long Itchington in Warwickshire to the centre of Birmingham and on to Handsacre in Staffordshire.

Location:Based in Birmingham - the Central Region runs from the east of Birmingham into the city centre, comprising Sublot Delta, 1B, 4 and 5S. More than 50% of the structures within IPT Area North are located in the Central Region. This region, which covers a complex urban environment, also includes the 3.5 mile twin bore Bromford Tunnel. It also includes Interchange Station, as well as crossing three major highways (A45, M6 and M42).

The SME MEP Engineer will act as the technical authority for MEP design, installation, testing, commissioning and handover activities, ensuring compliance with project requirements, engineering standards and regulatory obligations. Working closely with design, construction and commissioning teams, the role is critical to ensuring the successful delivery of complex infrastructure systems across one of Europe's largest construction programmes.

Key Accountabilities:
  • Act as the MEP Subject Matter Expert for allocated HS2 assets, facilities and infrastructure works.
  • Provide technical leadership and guidance on mechanical, electrical and public health engineering matters.
  • Review design deliverables, technical specifications, calculations and construction methodologies.
  • Support design assurance and technical approval processes.
  • Ensure MEP systems comply with HS2 standards, industry regulations and project requirements.
  • Manage technical interfaces between MEP, architectural, civil, structural and rail systems.
  • Provide solutions to complex engineering and construction challenges.
  • Review subcontractor submissions, RFIs, technical queries and design change requests.
  • Support installation, testing, commissioning, validation and handover activities.
  • Conduct inspections, audits and quality reviews to ensure compliance with specifications.
  • Identify technical risks, opportunities and value engineering initiatives.
  • Support project planning and programme delivery by providing expert engineering advice.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders, consultants, supply chain partners and client representatives.
  • Ensure adherence to health, safety, environmental and quality standards throughout project delivery.
  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Building Services Engineering or related discipline.
  • Chartered Engineer status (CEng) or working towards professional accreditation.
  • Strong technical knowledge of building services and infrastructure MEP systems.
  • Experience managing multidisciplinary interfaces and complex engineering challenges.
  • Understanding of applicable British Standards, Building Regulations and industry best practices
  • Experience supporting construction, commissioning and handover activities.
  • Excellent analytical, communication, and stakeholder management skills.
  • Strong knowledge of quality assurance, testing and commissioning processes.
