Job summary

BAE Systems Digital Intelligence in Gloucester (with a Manchester-based role) is hiring a Site Reliability Engineer to support essential services for national security projects, focusing on availability, performance and resilience.

Qualifications

  • Experience with Linux and Windows command lines (Bash/PowerShell).
  • Hands-on experience with cloud infrastructure (AWS/Azure/OpenStack).
  • Use of deployment tools (Chef/Puppet).
  • Expertise in monitoring large systems (ELK).
  • Experience in Agile/Scrum with Jira.
  • Diagnosing and troubleshooting application issues and outages.
  • Strong troubleshooting across stack levels.
  • Understanding ITIL terminology.
  • Experience with container management and microservices (Docker).
  • Experience extending and improving Open Source Software.
  • Familiarity with automation test frameworks (Selenium).
  • Awareness of technology trends to adopt cutting-edge tools.

Responsibilities

  • Support and maintain essential services that underpin core mission applications, improving availability, performance and stability.
  • Automate repetitive tasks and seek innovative solutions to problems.
  • Collaborate with product teams and advise on best practices to design and build systems.
  • Ensure support work stays under 50% of time; route excess support to product teams.
  • Instrument applications with monitoring and use data to drive daily improvements.
  • Understand the software-infrastructure relationship to optimize the deployed infrastructure.
  • Participate in the wider DevOps/SRE community within the organisation.

Job description

Salary: £65,000 - 65,000 per year

Requirements:
  • Experience in software development in Java and web technologies, e.g. JavaScript and HTML

  • Experience extending and improving Open Source Software

Responsibilities:
  • Support and maintain essential services that support core mission applications, proactively improving availability, performance and stability
  • Find innovative solutions to problems rather than undertaking repetitive work, automating everything possible
  • Work alongside product teams and advise them on good practice in how to design and build systems
  • Ensure support work does not take more than 50% of time, with excess support handled by the product team
  • Instrument applications where sufficient monitoring is not in place and use the output to demonstrate daily improvements
  • Understand the relationship between software and infrastructure and how to get the best out of the infrastructure deployed to
  • Participate in the wider DevOps/SRE community within the organisation
