Job summary

BAE Systems Digital Intelligence in the UK seeks an Operational Cyber Software Engineer to design, develop and test secure software across multiple languages and tools. The role is based in Gloucester, Manchester or London, with hybrid working options and a wide benefits package.

You will join a 4,500-strong team delivering high-assurance code for national security and commercial clients, with mentorship and structured progression available.

Qualifications

  • Familiar with IDEs, debuggers, version control, unit testing, mocking, CI and TDD.
  • Understanding of computing principles like stack/heap and compiled vs interpreted languages.
  • Proficient in at least one main language (C++, Java, C#) and one scripting language (Python, JavaScript, Perl, PowerShell).
  • Understanding of OS internals.
  • Able to learn new languages and technologies quickly.
  • Strong communication with non-technical stakeholders.
  • Eligibility to work in the UK and ability to obtain eDV clearance.
  • No prior cyber/defence experience required; training provided.

Job description

Salary: £75,000 - 75,000 per year

Requirements:
  • Familiarity with a variety of development tools (IDEs, debuggers, or version control) and techniques (unit testing, mocking, continuous integration, test-driven development).
  • Understanding of computing principles, such as stack/heap distinction and compiled/interpreted languages.
  • Proficiency with at least one solution language (e.g. C++, Java, C#) and one utility language (e.g. Python, JavaScript, Perl, PowerShell).
  • Understanding of the internals of at least one major operating system.
  • Ability to pick up new languages and technologies quickly.
  • Ability to communicate and collaborate effectively, including with people from non-technical backgrounds.
  • You do not need prior experience in cyber or defence; we will support your success through training and mentorship.
  • Security requirement: you must be eligible to work in the UK and be able to successfully achieve an eDV UK security clearance.
