Lanes Group is seeking a Site Manager to lead civils and wastewater infrastructure projects in Sheffield and surrounding areas, reporting to Sapphire Utility Solutions within Yorkshire Water - Capital Projects. You will oversee end-to-end delivery, safety, planning, and client engagement to achieve high-quality results.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Work collaboratively with Senior Management, Clients, and Local Authorities to agree project requirements and maintain strong working relationships throughout project delivery.
  • Build and maintain positive customer relationships, responding to concerns, requests, and operational issues promptly and professionally.
  • Lead, motivate, and support operational teams, encouraging personal development and continuous improvement.
  • Coordinate closely with planning and scheduling teams to ensure efficient resource allocation, workforce deployment, and job prioritisation.
  • Ensure all works are delivered in accordance with Lanes Group policies, procedures, client requirements, and industry standards.
  • Lead and manage Civils Operatives and Gangers engaged in all aspects of civil engineering works.
  • Optimise operational resources through effective planning and scheduling to maximise productivity and performance.
  • Manage fleet, plant, material, and equipment requirements to support the timely and efficient completion of works.
  • Demonstrate strong organisational skills while adhering to company policies, procedures, and best working practices, identifying improvements where appropriate.
  • Produce and review method statements, procedures, and associated operational documentation.
  • Read and interpret specifications, engineering drawings, and discipline-specific documentation to support operational delivery.
  • Maintain accurate records of completed works and ensure client systems are updated in real time.
  • Develop positive working relationships with operational teams, management, clients, and other departments.
  • Communicate confidently and professionally with both internal and external stakeholders.
  • Provide clear instructions and direction to operational teams, ensuring work is completed effectively and safely.
  • Interpret construction and utility drawings, including excavation dimensions, pipe installation details, reinforcement requirements, and shoring designs.
  • Ensure work crews are adequately supplied with the necessary tools, materials, equipment, and resources.
  • Manage the effective use of labour, materials, plant, and equipment to minimise waste and maximise efficiency.
  • Monitor workforce attendance, performance, productivity, and compliance with company standards.
  • Enforce health, safety, environmental, and quality procedures, ensuring all work activities meet regulatory and client requirements.
  • Take responsibility for the wellbeing, welfare, and development of employees within your team.
  • Identify training needs and implement development plans to improve skills and performance across the workforce.
  • Promote and maintain the highest standards of health and safety, ensuring all work activities are completed without incident or accident.
  • Carry out regular site inspections and audits to monitor compliance, quality, and operational performance.

Department:

Sapphire Utility Solutions, a Lanes Group Company specialise in multiple divisions. Yorkshire Water - Capital Projects is currently delivering the largest Capital Investment programme in its history, investing £8.3 billion between 2025 and 2030. The team plays a key role in enhancing drainage and water infrastructure across Yorkshire, delivering essential projects that improve storm overflow performance, upgrade water and wastewater treatment facilities, and strengthen the wider water network, to support long-term environmental and operational resilience.

Purpose of the Role:

The Site Manager is responsible for leading and managing teams in Sheffield and surrounding operational areas, ensuring the safe, efficient, and high-quality delivery of civils and wastewater infrastructure works. The role oversees end-to-end operational performance, resource planning, workforce management, client relationships, and compliance with health, safety, environmental, and quality standards. Key Requirements
Skills & Experience:
  • Previous experience in a supervisory role within the wastewater, drainage, utilities, or civil engineering sector.
  • Demonstrable experience managing and leading operational teams, including performance, wellbeing, and employee development.
  • Strong leadership and communication skills, with the ability to motivate teams and build effective working relationships with clients and stakeholders.
  • Excellent organisational skills, with the ability to coordinate resources, manage multiple priorities, and deliver work to deadlines.
  • Proven ability to deliver high standards of customer service and maintain positive client relationships.
  • Strong problem-solving skills, with a proactive approach to overcoming operational challenges and achieving results.
  • Good understanding of health, safety, environmental, and quality requirements within a field-based operational environment.
  • Ability to interpret drawings, specifications, and technical documentation relevant to civil engineering and utility works.
  • Full UK Driving Licence.
Desirable:
  • Knowledge of utility framework contracts and client delivery requirements.
  • Relevant supervisory, health and safety, or utility sector qualifications.
  • Experience managing fleet, plant, materials, and operational resources.
