Position: Freelance Site Manager

Project Location: Port Talbot

Contract Duration: 5 Months (Start: November 2026 – End: March 2027)

Project Overview

The Margam Connection Project is a critical National Grid upgrade delivering the essential high-voltage infrastructure required to support the decarbonisation and transition to green steel production at the Port Talbot Tata Steel plant.

This specific 5-month freelance role spans the peak winter installation window. It focuses heavily on managing the building envelopes, structural cladding, weatherproofing, and specialist roofing for the massive new 275kV Gas Insulated Switchgear (GIS) substation halls being erected at the Margam and Tata Steel boundaries.

Core Responsibilities
  • Subcontractor Management: Supervise and coordinate specialist trades (specifically roofing, high-performance cladding, structural steel, and rainwater systems) ensuring works align strictly with project schedules.
  • Winter Progression & H&S: Actively manage site progress during challenging winter conditions. Enforce uncompromising health and safety compliance, method statements (RAMS), and daily site permit-to-work systems.
  • Quality Assurance: Oversee strict compliance with technical specifications for high-voltage GIS asset enclosures, managing inspection test plans (ITPs), sign-offs, and progressive handover files.
  • Site Logistics: Coordinate logistics and material drops in accordance with the project's strict Construction Logistics Plan (CLP). Utilise the DataScope DMS booking system for deliveries via the designated Cefn Gwrgan Road control points and Tata Steel access boundaries.
  • Environmental & Compliance: Maintain strict adherence to local council parameters, Considerate Constructors Scheme guidelines, and strict site-waste segregation rules.
  • Reporting: Maintain detailed daily site diaries, progress reports, allocation sheets, and digital quality checks using the project's integrated digital management tools.
Requirements & Qualifications

Essential

  • SMSTS (Site Management Safety Training Scheme) & CSCS Black Card (Manager level).
  • NVQ Level 6
  • First Aid at Work (valid certification).
  • Proven track record as a Site Manager delivering large-scale commercial building envelopes, industrial cladding, or structural roofing packages.
  • Understanding of high-risk site regulations and complex subcontractor coordination.
  • Local proximity to the Port Talbot / Neath area or a reasonable daily commute.
Desirable
  • Proficiency in QA digital site platforms (e.g., Field View, DataScope DMS)
