Job summary

Randstad CPE is seeking a skilled Site Engineer for a major A9 Tomatin to Moy dual carriageway upgrade in Scotland. Based near Inverness, you will report to the Section Engineer and drive setting-out, quality control and site safety across heavy civil works.

You will collaborate with Transport Scotland and Mott MacDonald, delivering 10 km of new dual carriageway, major concrete structures and drainage. Applicants must be based in the Highlands or willing to relocate.

Qualifications

  • Civil Engineering background on heavy civil projects.
  • Experience with setting-out and surveying using standard equipment.
  • Familiarity with RC structures, formwork and site QA processes.

Responsibilities

  • Execute precise setting-out using on-site primary control and survey equipment.
  • Maintain quality records, QA check sheets and daily diaries.
  • Oversee concrete works, formwork and reinforcement drawings interpretation.

Site Engineer

Location: Tomatin (near Inverness / Aviemore), Scotland

Rate: £240.00 / day (Inside IR35) (Subject to review/uplift for the right candidate)

Contract Type: Freelance / Contract

Working Hours: Monday - Friday, 40 hours per week

About the Role

We are seeking a versatile, experienced Site Engineer to join the delivery team on the major A9 Tomatin to Moy dual carriageway upgrade. Reporting directly to the Section Engineer, you will play a key role in executing engineering control,quality control, field health & safety, and daily operations across heavy civil works. You will work alongside key project stakeholders, including Transport Scotland and Mott MacDonald, on a site delivering 10 km of new dual carriageway, side roads, major concrete structures, and extensive drainage infrastructure.

Key Responsibilities
  • Engineering Control & Surveying: Execute precise setting out from primary control provided on-site using standard survey equipment (level & total station/theodolite). Provide detailed setting-out sketches and ensure all survey tools are maintained.
  • Quality Assurance: Produce accurate as-built drawings, complete Quality Check Sheets, and maintain meticulous daily records and diaries. Ensure works comply with construction tolerances, ACP, and contract specifications.
  • Site Operations & Concrete Works: Oversee works involving reinforced concrete structures, formwork, falsework, and concrete testing. Interpret reinforcement and structural drawings with accuracy.
  • Safety & Environment: Actively manage Permits to Work, complete Field Control Sheets, conduct safety briefings, perform field inspections, and report hazards.
  • Productivity & Commercial Support: Track daily material usage against theoretical estimates, conduct accurate material take‑offs, monitor weekly progress against target programs. Identify and flag scope changes/additional works.
Candidate Requirements

Skills & Experience:

  • Strong, well-rounded background as a Civil Engineering Site Engineer on heavy civil projects (structures, drainage, earthworks, roadworks).
  • Proficient in basic setting‑out techniques using levels and theodolites/total stations.
  • Practical experience working with Reinforced Concrete (RC) structures, formwork, and falsework.
  • Good understanding of standard contract documents, specifications, and permit systems.
  • Strong capability in material scheduling, take‑offs, and tracking project KPIs.
Logistics & Location

Commute / Location: Candidates must be based in (or willing to relocate/commute to) the Highlands region (e.g., Inverness or Aviemore). (Note: Accommodation/travel allowance is not standard, but lodge allowances may be considered for strong candidates).
