Job description

Job Title: Band 6 Sister/Charge Nurse - Endoscopy

Mersey and West Lancs Teaching Hospital is seeking a dedicated Band 6 Sister/Charge Nurse to join our Endoscopy team across Southport and Ormskirk. Our department offers a full range of diagnostic and therapeutic procedures in 5 treatment rooms, collaborating closely with Theatres.

Our service is progressing towards JAG accreditation, providing opportunities for personal growth and development. Endoscopy experience is essential to support our two-site department, which handles approximately 40 patients daily in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.

We are looking for an enthusiastic, motivated, experienced Endoscopy nurse capable of leading the training and assessment of new and junior team members, ensuring all staff are trained and competent in their roles within Endoscopy and the Treatment Centre.

The post holder should exemplify leadership, organization, and managerial skills within an acute setting.

Key Duties
  1. Provide leadership, management, and team development, including workload allocation.
  2. Set goals and standards of care, and develop tools for service improvement.
  3. Manage patient flow, ensuring timely admissions and discharges.
  4. Promote the Trust positively to patients, relatives, and the community.
  5. Stay informed on relevant health policies and their impact.
  6. Escalate issues related to care standards and patient safety, and develop corrective actions.
  7. Develop and implement policies and protocols relevant to the specialty.
  8. Manage stock and equipment, ensuring resource efficiency.
  9. Represent the team in corporate groups and at conferences.
  10. Foster effective communication within the multidisciplinary team and externally.
  11. Participate in business planning and service development initiatives.
  12. Lead investigations of incidents and complaints, and manage associated processes.
Clinical & Professional Responsibilities
  1. Provide expert nursing advice and support for high-quality, individualized patient care.
  2. Manage complex clinical situations and emergencies confidently.
  3. Maintain competence with specialized equipment.
  4. Act as a role model and leader, ensuring high standards of care.
  5. Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate care programs based on evidence-based practice.
  6. Set and monitor nursing care standards.
  7. Liaise with medical and multidisciplinary teams for optimal patient care.
  8. Ensure care delivery complies with professional standards and promotes patient involvement.
  9. Maintain safe drug custody and administration procedures.
  10. Undertake relevant clinical training to enhance skills.
  11. Take charge of the clinical area as needed, ensuring safe staffing.
  12. Identify and manage clinical risks appropriately.
  13. Ensure accurate and up-to-date documentation.
Teaching & Training Responsibilities
  1. Foster a learning environment.
  2. Participate in staff education, including orientation and supervision.
  3. Mentor and support learners and team members.
  4. Assess developmental needs and facilitate specialty training.
  5. Maintain personal development records for revalidation.
  6. Supervise junior staff and students, ensuring high standards of care.
  7. Share specialist knowledge and support ward-wide learning.
Line Management/Supervisory Responsibilities
  1. Develop action plans for staff development.
  2. Participate in staff performance appraisals and revalidation.
  3. Motivate staff for personal and professional growth.
  4. Manage staffing resources effectively.
  5. Support staff welfare and induction processes.
  6. Coordinate staffing schedules to meet patient needs.
Financial Responsibilities
  1. Use resources efficiently, including stock and equipment management.
  2. Handle patient valuables securely.
  3. Authorize timesheets for temporary staff.
Research & Audit
  1. Develop audit methods to evaluate nursing practice.
  2. Promote awareness of current research and incorporate findings into practice.
  3. Identify audit areas, conduct audits, and analyze data for service improvement.
  4. Participate in research data collection and dissemination.
