Job summary

AECOM is seeking an experienced Rail Signalling Project Engineer in the UK to lead signalling delivery from feasibility through handover on multi-disciplinary rail projects. You will assure signalling design, coordinate interfaces, and support safety cases across RAMS and SIL compliance.

Role requires delivering signalling design on live projects, and mentoring junior engineers while driving continuous improvement and standards adherence.

Qualifications

  • Our IRSE/IET registration at IEng or CEng is preferred.
  • Experience as Signalling Project Engineer on multi-disciplinary rail projects.
  • Proven ability to deliver signalling design on live projects.

Responsibilities

  • Lead day-to-day engineering delivery for signalling work packages; ensure safety, quality and schedule.
  • Develop and manage technical scope, requirements, interfaces, and design basis.
  • Coordinate multi-disciplinary inputs (signalling, telecoms, traction power, rolling stock, civils, E&P).
  • Assure signalling deliverables: schemes, tables, wiring plans, BOQs, reports and tests.
  • Support hazard identification, RAMS, and SIL compliance; log hazards and contribute to safety cases.
  • Assist test/commissioning and defect resolution across factory and site.
  • Plan readiness reviews and entry-into-service activities.
  • Manage design reviews, constructability input, value engineering, and change control.
  • Support programme logic, risks, opportunities, and progress reporting; assist earned value.
  • Ensure adherence to standards, governance, and assurance processes.
  • Mentor junior engineers and contribute to continuous improvement and digital delivery.

Job Description

We are searching for a experienced Rail Signalling Project Engineer to join us in delivering safe, reliable, and compliant signalling solutions across the full project lifecycle, from feasibility and requirements definition through design, integration, testing, commissioning, and handover of Rail Projects.

As the Signalling Project Engineer you will be responsible for the assurance of signalling design for multi-disciplinary projects, predominately S&C renewals.

Here’s what you’ll do:
  • Lead day-to-day engineering delivery for signalling work packages, ensuring safety, quality and schedule performance.
  • Develop and manage technical scope, requirements, assumptions, and interfaces; maintain the design basis and configuration control.
  • Coordinate multi-disciplinary inputs (signalling, telecoms, traction power, rolling stock, civils, E&P) and manage external interfaces (client, operator, maintainers, OEMs).
  • Assure signalling deliverables: scheme plans, control tables, location area plans, wiring design, bonding/earthing, cable plans, BOQs, design reports, and test/commissioning documentation.
  • Support hazard identification, safety assurance, RAMS, and SIL compliance; maintain hazard logs and contribute to safety cases.
  • Support test and commissioning (factory/site) and defect resolution.
  • Plan and undertake readiness reviews, and entry-into-service.
  • Manage design reviews, constructability input, value engineering, and change control.
  • Contribute to programme logic, risks, opportunities, and progress reporting; support earned value and forecasting.
  • Ensure adherence to applicable standards, governance, and assurance processes
  • Mentor junior engineers and contribute to continuous improvement, digital delivery, and lessons learned.
Qualifications

We are searching for someone with proven experience delivering rail signalling engineering on live projects across design, integration, testing, and/or commissioning stages.

  • 7.8.110F Engineering Manager Projects Engineering or 7.8.230F Senior Engineering Manager (Projects Engineering) licence, and/or registered with professional engineering institution (IRSE, IET etc.) at IEng or CEng.
  • Experience of acting as Signalling Project Engineer
  • Experience of delivering signalling design as part of multi-disciplinary rail systems projects

Beneficial:

  • Holder of 1.1.160v6 Signalling Design Verifier
  • Professional registration; IEng, CEng etc (if in addition to applicable IRSE licence)
  • Holder of PTS
  • Experience of delivering signalling design as part of S&C renewals
