Job Opportunity: BSL Interpreters for the workplace and FE/HE Settings.

We seek a qualified British Sign Language (BSL) Interpreter to support deaf students and staff in various education settings. This is a rewarding opportunity to contribute to inclusive work and learning and ensure equal access to education.

Role Overview

You will be working closely with Deaf students, peers, lecturers, and support staff to provide real-time interpretation during:

• Lectures, seminars, and tutorials
• One-to-one academic support sessions
• Group discussions and workshops
• Campus events or placements (where applicable)

Location:

opportunities in various locations throughout the UK

Schedule: flexible depending on student needs.

Contract Type: Freelance

Pay Rate: competitive, depending on experience + travel expenses

Requirements

• NRCPD registration (or equivalent)
• Experience working in educational settings, ideally FE/HE
• Familiarity with academic terminology and inclusive communication practices
• Comfortable working independently and as part of a wider student support team
• Ability to demonstrate understanding and use of professional boundaries, safeguarding, and non-oppressive practice
• Commitment to supporting users in developing a range of tools for their communication
• Support the development of confidence in self-advocacy and reliance

Desirable Skills

• Knowledge and understanding of the deaf community and culture
• Working in classroom settings
• Experience with remote interpreting platforms (e.g. Zoom, MS Teams)
• Knowledge of assistive technologies used in education
• Understanding of the Equality Act 2010 and inclusive education principles
