Job description

About Us

University Arms is a 192-bedroom design-led Hotel situated in the heart of Cambridge, United Kingdom. Overlooking Parker’s Piece is the Hotel’s quintessentially British Restaurant and Bar, Parker’s Tavern, Library Lounge, and beautiful 272 square metre wood-panelled Ballroom.

Opened in 1834 as a Coaching Inn, University Arms is Cambridge’s oldest Hotel. For 180 years, the Hotel was added to, updated, and modernised in line with the age; however, it was the reopening in 2018 after a four-year £80m full renovation that really positioned the Hotel. It is now Cambridge's 'go to’ destination, alluring visitors with the promise of a sense of modern luxury.

What Will You Be Doing

Working as part of a shift rota, you will be responsible for carrying out planned preventative maintenance (PPM), responding to reactive maintenance requests, and ensuring the safe and efficient operation of the hotel's plant, equipment and building services. You will play a key role in maintaining high operational standards, ensuring minimal disruption to guests and supporting the smooth day-to-day running of the hotel.

This is a full-time position working 40 hours per week on a rotating 4 days on, 3 days off shift pattern. Shifts are 10 hours in duration, with every other weekend included as part of the rota. Flexibility to support the operational needs of the hotel is essential.

THE DUTIES

  • Plan, schedule and carry out a comprehensive programme of planned preventative maintenance (PPM) throughout the hotel.

  • Respond promptly to reactive maintenance requests and equipment breakdowns, minimising disruption to guests and operations.

  • Diagnose faults and carry out repairs to electrical, plumbing, HVAC and general building services.

  • Inspect plant, equipment and hotel facilities, identifying and rectifying defects before they become operational issues.

  • Undertake routine testing of fire alarm systems, emergency lighting and other statutory equipment in accordance with current legislation.

  • Maintain accurate maintenance records, PPM schedules and statutory compliance documentation.

  • Ensure all work is carried out in accordance with health and safety legislation and hotel procedures.

  • Liaise with hotel departments to respond efficiently to maintenance requests.

  • Maintain a clean, safe and organised workshop and plant room areas.

What Are We Looking For In You

  • Previous experience as a Shift Engineer or Maintenance Engineer ideally within a hotel or hospitality environment.

  • Strong practical knowledge of planned preventative maintenance (PPM) and reactive maintenance.

  • Experience maintaining electrical, plumbing, HVAC and general building services.

  • Good fault-finding and diagnostic skills with the ability to resolve maintenance issues efficiently.

  • Knowledge of commercial kitchen equipment is desirable.

  • Understanding of fire alarm systems, emergency lighting and statutory compliance requirements.

  • Good understanding of UK health and safety legislation and safe working practices.

  • Ability to prioritise workloads and respond effectively in a fast-paced operational environment.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with a positive, customer-focused approach.

  • Able to work independently and as part of a team.

  • Flexible to work shifts, including weekends and bank holidays.

  • Relevant engineering qualification or recognised trade apprenticeship is desirable.
