Job summary

Meridian Business Support Ltd is seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer to join a UK-based design team crafting high-quality sheet metal products. You will take concepts through to detailed manufacturing drawings, driving design for manufacture and cost-effective production.

Prototyping and hands-on sheet metal processes are valued as part of the role. The ideal candidate has at least 2 years in mechanical design, a relevant degree, and proven experience with DFMA.

Qualifications

• Minimum 2 years experience as Mechanical Design Engineer.
• Degree educated or strong bias to mechanical engineering.
• Sheet metal manufacture experience and knowledge of sheet metal processes.
• Demonstrated ability in product development from prototype to mass production.
• Proven experience with Solid Edge and SolidWorks.

Responsibilities

• Take products from conception to detailed engineering drawings for manufacture.
• Determine manufacturing methods for engineering designs for in-house and external manufacture.
• Ensure tolerance analysis to ease manufacture and prevent tolerance buildup.
• Collaborate with Development, Production Engineering & Purchasing to implement design for manufacture prior to handover.
• Optimize designs to reduce costs, increase efficiency and maintain quality.
• Generate Bills of Materials spreadsheets for manufacturing cost estimation.
• Keep product progress feedback sheets updated.

Job description

Working within the existing design team of this quality British designed and manufactured product, the Mechanical Design Engineer will be responsible improving the design and maintenance of a high quality, aesthetically pleasing product made of sheet metal. Design for manufacture experience is vital to your success in this fabulous Design Engineer’s position, and some hands on experience with prototyping products and sheet metal processes is also requierd.

The Opportunity:

• Work closely with the Technical Engineering Manager, design and development department taking products from conception to detailed engineering drawings for manufacture.
• Determine manufacturing methods for engineering designs accounting for both in – house and external manufacture capabilities.
• Ensure that tolerance analysis is carried out during the design process, allowing for ease of manufacture, product function and eliminating tolerance build up issues during product manufacture and assembly.
• Work with all departments involved in the NPD program, in particular, Development, Production Engineering & Purchasing, ensuring design for manufacture is implemented prior to product handover.
• Work with the Production Engineering department to optimise designs to reduce costs, increase efficiency and maintain product quality.
• Ensure Bill of Materials spreadsheets are generated during the design process enabling Production Engineering to generate product manufacturing costs.
• Ensure new product progress feedback sheets are filled out and kept up to date.

Preferred Skills:

• Minimum of 2 years experience working as a Mechanical Design Engineer.
• Either degree educated or a proven engineering background with a strong bias to mechanical engineering.
• Sheet metal manufacture experience and knowledge of sheet metal processes also essential.
• Demonstrated ability in product development from initial prototype to mass production.
• Proven experience of working with Solid Edge Solid Works.
