Job summary

Carmichael UK is actively seeking a Setting Out Engineer to lead surveying for a major rail soil nailing and slope stabilisation project. You will set out works, manage control points, and ensure documentation aligns with design drawings and specifications.

The role requires rail environment experience, PTS and CSCS credentials, and competence with Leica/Trimble GPS/Total Station tools. Immediate start on a long-term contract is available.

Qualifications

• Previous experience as Site Engineer / Setting Out Engineer / Section Engineer.
• Experience setting out for soil nailing, slope stabilisation or geotechnical projects.
• Valid PTS (Personal Track Safety) card - Essential.
• CSCS Card.
• Full UK Driving Licence.

Responsibilities

• Setting out soil nailing works, retaining structures and related civil activities.
• Carrying out surveying and setting out using GPS, Leica and Total Station equipment.
• Establishing control points and maintaining survey records.
• Producing as-built surveys and documenting site engineering records.
• Ensuring works follow design drawings and project specs.
• Carrying out QA checks and inspection records.
• Collaborating with site management, subcontractors and design teams.

Setting Out Engineer – Rail – Soil Nailing Project – Immediate Start - Contract

We are currently seeking an experienced Setting Out Engineer to work on a major rail infrastructure project involving extensive soil nailing and geotechnical stabilisation works.

This is an excellent opportunity to join a reputable civil engineering contractor delivering critical earthworks and slope stabilisation works within a live rail environment.

Key Responsibilities

• Setting out soil nailing works, retaining structures and associated civil engineering activities.
• Carrying out precise surveying and setting out using GPS, Leica and Total Station equipment.
• Establishing control points and maintaining survey records.
• Producing as-built surveys and maintaining site engineering documentation.
• Ensuring works are delivered in accordance with design drawings and project specifications.
• Carrying out quality assurance checks and completing inspection records.
• Working closely with site management, subcontractors and design teams.
• Monitoring progress and identifying any engineering or technical issues.
• Supporting production of RAMS, ITPs and temporary works requirements.
• Ensuring compliance with Network Rail standards and project procedures.
• Promoting and maintaining high standards of health, safety and environmental compliance.

Requirements

• Previous experience as a Site Engineer, Setting Out Engineer or Section Engineer.
• Proven experience setting out for soil nailing, slope stabilisation, retaining walls, embankments or geotechnical projects.
• Previous experience working on rail infrastructure projects.
• Valid PTS (Personal Track Safety) card - Essential.
• Competent using Leica, Trimble, GPS and Total Station equipment.
• Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and specifications.
• Strong understanding of QA procedures and engineering documentation.
• CSCS Card.
• Full UK Driving Licence.

Desirable

• HNC/HND or Degree in Civil Engineering.
• Experience working on earthworks, embankment remediation or rockfall protection schemes.
• SMSTS or SSSTS.
• First Aid at Work.
• Temporary Works knowledge.
