Job summary

Randstad CPE is seeking an experienced Senior Design Engineer (Permanent Way) in Derby. The role leads P-Way design across rail upgrades from feasibility to detail, covering plain line and S&C, track lowering, platform extensions, and clearance analyses.

You will mentor Design Engineers and CAD Technicians, work with a multidisciplinary team, and contribute to IDRs while ensuring safety standards and CDM 2015 compliance. Hybrid working is available.

Qualifications

• HNC in Engineering or a Civil Engineering degree is required.
• Incorporated/Chartered status (ICE/PWI) or working towards it.
• Proven track record in track design (S&C and Plain Line).
• Knowledge of UK rail construction practices and standards.

Responsibilities

• Lead and deliver P-Way design packages to budget, quality and schedules.
• Produce and review calculations, reports, specs and risk assessments.
• Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and stakeholders for integration.
• Mentor junior designers and review technical outputs.

Job Title: Senior Design Engineer

Working Hours: 7.5 hours per day

Location: Derby (Hybrid / Site options: Raynesway, Canary Wharf, Prescott, Redhill)

Role Overview

We are seeking an experienced Senior Design Engineer (Permanent Way) to join an industry-leading Track Design Team. In this role, you will lead and develop detailed Permanent Way (P-Way) designs across a variety of rail upgrades, renewals, and enhancement projects. You will be responsible for taking designs from initial feasibility through to detailed completion, working on plain line, switches and crossings (S&C), track lowering, platform extensions, linespeed improvements, and clearance analysis.

Key Responsibilities

• Design Delivery: Lead and execute P-Way design packages (Plain Line and S&C renewals) to budget, quality, and project schedules.
• Technical Output: Produce and review calculations, technical reports, specifications, and designer's risk assessments in compliance with CDM 2015 and safety regulations.
• Integration & Liaison: Collaborate with multidisciplinary design teams, contractors, CREs, CEMs, and project stakeholders to ensure seamless P-Way integration.
• Team Leadership: Mentor, guide, and review the technical output of Design Engineers, CAD Technicians, and junior team members.
• Design Reviews: Attend formal inter-disciplinary design reviews (IDRs) and provide cost-effective solutions tailored to project specifications.

Key Requirements

Essential:

• Education: Minimum HNC in Engineering with substantial rail experience, or a Degree in Civil Engineering (or equivalent).
• Qualifications: Incorporated/Chartered status (ICE/PWI) or actively working towards professional qualification.
• Technical Experience: Proven track record in accurate track design (S&C and Plain Line) with direct knowledge of trackform, components, survey techniques, and UK rail construction practices.
• Software Skills: Proficiency with MicroStation, Bentley Railtrack, and/or OpenRail.
• Standards & Safety: Strong working knowledge of Network Rail / London Underground standards, Health & Safety at Work Act, and CDM 2015 regulations.

Desirable:

• Detailed design experience in track drainage, formation design, or under-track crossings (UTX).
• ClearRoute software proficiency.
• Experience acting as Contractor's Responsible Engineer (CRE).
• Stressing knowledge and/or international rail design experience.
