Job summary

The Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is seeking a Senior Therapeutic Radiographer for the Northern Centre for Cancer Care in Carlisle. You will lead a radiography team, ensure safe treatment delivery, and develop advanced clinical skills within a dynamic radiotherapy service.

Qualifications

• BSc in Radiotherapy or equivalent qualification; HCPC registered.
• Evidence of continuing professional development and the willingness to undertake further education.
• Recent post-qualification clinical experience in a modern radiotherapy department; senior radiographer experience.

Responsibilities

• Provide day-to-day leadership and support to a team of radiographers within the clinical area.
• Ensure safe and accurate delivery of radiotherapy treatments within the area.
• Deliver and support complex radiotherapy procedures, including localisation, image guidance, dose calculation and treatment delivery.
• Practice autonomously within departmental protocols and national guidance.
• Contribute to service development, quality improvement and adoption of new techniques.
• Support education, supervision and development of staff and students.
• Collaborate with the multidisciplinary team to deliver holistic patient care.

Senior Therapeutic Radiographer

Join a progressive and innovative radiotherapy service at the Northern Centre for Cancer Care North Cumbria (NCCC-NS), Carlisle. This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced Therapeutic Radiographer to further develop their career within a department committed to delivering high-quality, patient-centred cancer care.

We are a forward-thinking service with a strong programme of innovation, including MRI-based planning and Surface Guided Radiotherapy (SGRT). As part of our continued development, we are preparing to introduce online adaptive radiotherapy, creating exciting opportunities for staff to develop advanced clinical skills and contribute to service transformation.

We are expanding our pre-treatment workforce and are seeking an enthusiastic individual to join our small, friendly, and supportive team. The successful candidate will play a key role in the preparation, simulation, planning imaging, and treatment verification processes for approximately 1,200 patients each year across adult cancer services.

Our department employs a wide range of advanced radiotherapy techniques, including VMAT, SABR, respiratory gating, and SGRT, supported by Siemens CT and MRI scanners and Varian TrueBeam linear accelerators.

Main duties of the job

As a Senior Therapeutic Radiographer, you will provide expert technical leadership within your specialist area, supporting clinical excellence, service development, quality improvement, and the education and mentorship of colleagues. You will work closely with the wider multidisciplinary team to ensure the highest standards of patient care and treatment accuracy.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic and motivated Band 6 Therapeutic Radiographer to join the Northern Centre for Cancer Care‑North Cumbria in Carlisle. This role offers the opportunity to develop specialist clinical, technical, and leadership skills within a large and innovative radiotherapy service.

The successful candidate will:

• Provide day‑to‑day leadership and support to a team of radiographers within their designated clinical area, ensuring the highest standards of technical practice, patient safety, and patient‑centred care.
• Be accountable for the safe and accurate delivery of radiotherapy treatments within their clinical area.
• Deliver and support complex radiotherapy procedures, including localisation, image guidance, dose calculation, treatment verification, and treatment delivery.
• Practice autonomously and professionally in accordance with departmental protocols, national guidance, and professional standards.
• Ensure workload targets, quality standards, and service objectives are achieved through the effective use of available resources.
• Contribute to service development, quality improvement initiatives, and the implementation of new techniques and technologies.
• Support the education, supervision, and development of staff and students, fostering a positive learning environment.
• Work collaboratively within the multidisciplinary team to deliver holistic patient care and provide specialist advice, information, and support to patients, relatives, and carers throughout their treatment journey.

Person Specification

QUALIFICATIONS

• BSc in Radiotherapy or equivalent qualification
• State registration with Health & Care Professions Council
• Evidence of continuing professional development through postgraduate training and study appropriate to the post
• Willing to undertake further education relevant to post

KNOWLEDGE

• Specialist knowledge in the delivery of radiotherapy across a broad range of techniques and complexity and of developments within this field
• Extensive knowledge of current treatment and imaging procedures, policies and working practices
• A working knowledge of standards and legislation in other relevant areas e.g. Health and Safety at work, COSHH, Risk Management and Clinical Governance

EXPERIENCE

• Recent post qualification clinical experience in a modern radiotherapy department
